Irked by repetative actors

I think that Mike Dopud, Ty Olson, Sebastian Spence, Brian Markinson, Leo Li Chiang, and Jill Teed must be among the prototype human/cylon hybrids. They have each had multiple roles in the RDM Galactica universe. From Specialist Gage to Captain Mike "Minute Man" Tornvald, and Sgt Hadrian to Commander Ozar, Jordan Durham to Commander Nash, from Pilot to Marine and so on. How can continuity be kept when the actors keep getting rehired for different roles in the spin offs. Did SyFy really think we wouldn't notice? I know that these people can act and in most cases the characters they have played in the past in BSG Series have been secondary characters, but how about some new blood in the franchise. I am not trying to put these actors out of work infact I actually like most of these actors. It just irks me that syfy thought we might not notice.

reply

Oh you figured us out! I'm actually a stealth market analyst for SyFy and we really thought we could pull the wool over your eyes with that whole "reusing actors" thing, but... you got us. We REALLY THOUGHT no one would notice.. now the cat is out of the bag. Why did you tell everyone anyways? Why couldn't you just keep it to yourself? Well anyways, YOU WIN! Atta go.. nice catch.

I think Mike Dopud is required by law to be in every single sci-fi production in Vancouver. Each Stargate show, nBSG, Caprica, Halo: Forward Unto Dawn, and now this

reply

Vancouver's got a smaller talent pool to draw from than Hollywood does; it's inevitable that you'll see the same actors used over and over again. Plus, why wouldn't you want to re-hire people you've already worked with, knowing how good they are, and that they're more than capable of giving you the performances you're looking for? Personally, it makes me enjoy a show that much more when there's a familiar face in it.

Just thought I'd drag over some posts on the topic from forums.televisionwithoutpity.com, specifically: http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?showtopic=3199738&am p;view=findpost&p=15372312

Enter John frackin' Pyper-Ferguson as Xander Toth, a.k.a. Tomas Vergis from Caprica.
I have been fanworking two different explanations (other than the fact that they have been reusing the same bunch of actors):

1. We are actually seeing the great-grandparents/grandparents/great uncles & aunts/parents/ etc... of the Colonial Fleet's crew. Like Kirby, I keep on thinking that this was a reference to Narcho and that this could be his grandfather or great uncle. Also did anyone get the "Sunshine" reference? Creepy.

2. The Colonial gene pool is so small that everybody looks a like but no one notices it or cares about it (sort of what Vala would joked, to Daniel and Mitchell, about on SG-1)
I love that idea so much more than any real world explanation of rehiring actors familiar with the project who have proven themselves in other installments of the series.
Thank you, TVspecator. It makes it much more enjoyable. Xander, a resourceful and at times ruthless survivor of a snowbound land is...what? Tomas Vergis' grandson? Son?

I also find downloading the HD of the episode, copying it onto a flash drive, and then plugging it into my TV to watch is much better than watching it on my laptop.

In addition to the potential ancestors aspect, seeing the same faces in other roles fits in a meta sort of way to "All this has happened before..." Remember Leoben's lines in "Flesh and Bone": "Each of us plays a role, each time a different role."

wishiwasvulcan, last year, when Ty Olsson tweeted that he'd be in Blood & Chrome, I asked him if there was any chance he was playing a relative of Captain Kelly. His response was that it was a new character, but, he said "I'm imagining some loose, untraceable bloodline connection :)". So, it's not just the fans who are looking for some deeper meaning behind the casting choices.

reply

Ditto. I was about to write the same thing. Sebastian Spence as a fighter pilot in both series???

I'm an American who lived in Vancouver, BC from 2006-2008. Watched a lot of shows filmed there for Canada and for the US and noticed that most sitcoms, tv dramas/scifi/fantasy shows and movies recycle a lot of the same Canadian actors and actresses. Ever since I moved back to the states I can spot one right away and what shows they were on. They call Vancouver "Hollywood North" for a reason despite many shows and movies film in Quebec, Alberta and Toronto. At least there actors get constant work where the US is soo big it's harder to make it here. And these Canadian actors are just as star worthy as the stars in the US!

So, do you want a medal or a cookie for your brown-nosing?

reply

I know man. I live up here and see these actors all over my TV.

The one actress I wouldn’t mind to be in it too would be Grace Park – but she is is missing

My all time favorite shows: Buffy – Farscape – Dead Like Me – Babylon 5 - Fringe - BSG

reply

diffinantly not the only series/location to do it.

Star Trek recycles actors all the time
Chicago area is notorious for using the same actors in cop movies.

This isnt so much about hiring people you've worked with before its about Cronyism, so much like the nepotism we always see in the entertainment industry. Sych a shame that other talents never get to see the light of day cause of this.

I wonder whether some actors may be unwilling to work in sci-fi?

reply

Sofianna,

Just a generalism on my reply here, but I think actors are no different than any other profssion. You'll have people who refuse to do a certain job, but you'll have others than say, "I need to pay some bills here. And a job is a job."

What you dont realize is that:

1. They are cyclons of a secret 14th colony.
2. The 14th colony eventually develop into the Borg of star trek.
3. Then the original Borg develop interstellar travel and finally make it back to the Milky Way Galaxy because they encouter/assimilate technology from the lost ship in SGU.
4. We also find out that the ancient dieties of Kobol were actually the Q. Which is why Q re-introduced the borg to earth humans, which are decendants of cylons.

You mean "cylons" not "cyclons" right? Or we're these robots made from spare parts of Dyson vacuum cleaners "with cyclon technology"? Heh. Sorry. I couldn't resist. Probably in part because when I was a kid I used to be afraid that giant vacuum cleaners were going to suck me out of my bed from the window.

reply

Hahaha, I thought it was me. I saw Spence and it bugged me...where have I seen him before???

I get these guys are good actors, but this isn't Law & Order. This especially seems to be shoddy work on a show which relies heavily on clone robots as part of its mythos.

reply

LOL you've got a point there.

reply

I know...this actor would like a shot at a role!

reply

Meh. Star Trek used the same actors all the time. Big whoop.

reply

yeah - isn't Vaughn Armstrong like the king of recurring characters? Still, Star Trek at least was able to disguise the actors through prosthetics.

There was also one episode of TOS where Kirk is beamed back aboard by an extra transporter operator (possibly Mr Kyle), he arrives on the bridge and relieves the officer in charge - played by the same extra.
