White Hollywood

I find it interesting that Hollywood would make a Spanish-language comedy with a predominately Hispanic cast, only to cast the lead role as a recognizable white Male. Ferrel's character is named Armando Alvarez, a very Hispanic name. It seems they can't take a risk like this without casting someone to get white people in the theaters as well as the Hispanic market. Is this a part of existing social prejudice that they need to market such a film in this way? Or are they simply racist?

That is the main joke. It's similar to if a project were to cast Danny DeVito as Bruce Lee. They didn't cast, say, Ryan Gosling for lead.

The concept was Ferrell's idea and he wanted to play the role, so ... what's the porblem with that? In fact it's great that the rest of the cast, bar one, was Hispanic.

Why problem make? When you no problem have, you don't want to make ...

I also find it interesting that movies don't reflect the reality we live in 100%. Movies can't be used for fantasy or comedic purposes. C'mon, what are we doing here?

Also, why don't they show more people going to the bathroom and brushing their teeth and farting and stuff. It's not very realistic. It's time to change, White Hollywood. Geesh.

I guess you didn't pay attention to the credits? Will Ferrel was the producer. This is one of his movies, why wouldn't he be the lead? I guess it's easier to be offended on the internet than make any sense. Troll away.

It wouldn't be as funny if it wasn't Will Ferrell. Accusing them of being racist is completely stupid and foolish. The whole reason that this movie is funny, is because Will Ferrell is speaking Spanish throughout it and not as many people would even bother with this movie if he wasnt in it.

I have a feeling the original poster must be a troll, no way is someone who can put together that coherent of a sentence that stupid. The real question is, are all the people who essentially agreed actually that stupid? It's a little worrisome to think too hard about.

This whole project was Will Ferrell's fun idea, and yes, his whiteness is part of the joke, as is "the way he talks", mocked by his own father. As someone else pointed out, the entire movie is subtitled, which typical American audiences hate (note the gross for this movie...), and the whole movie is full of references to classic Mexican film/TV cliches, which largely do not apply to any English-language works of that or other times.

So how is this nice thing that Will Ferrell did, actually paying attention to the large Spanish-speaking minority in our country, supposed to be a bad thing? Does someone out there who watched this silly, simple story really think this was some "hot script" people were dying to make, and "they" cast Will Ferrell to sell it to English speakers? Think about it for more than 2 seconds, and if you come out with the same conclusion, then you truly are an idiot. O un burro, si prefiere.

All this racist BS... is going to be over in a few generations anyway... the argument is already becoming irrelvant as our races continue to mix. I'm a daughter of a Native American man (from the Rez-Full Blooded Indian) and a Spanish woman. So, I'm half Spanish & half Mandan/Sioux. I married a Mexican man, both my kids look totally white, with hazel/green eyes, brown hair, tan skin. They look a little hispanic but more white. As they go on to have their children, I'm sure they'll have mixed race children... Americans are just that... a cocktail of mixed races. We really need to over what is and isn't racist and just embrace our 'American-ness'.
