There are too many things going on in Vera episodes. First of all Vera is a older overweight woman dressed like a house cleaner. She is hard to understand with her accent. She has many people working for her but does not seem to get what is going on till the end.
Brenda Blethyn is an award winning actress who is carrying her own show into now the 7th season. [During her career, she has received numerous nominations for Academy Awards, SAG, Emmy's, Golden Globes and has won a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, an Empire Award, a Theatre World Award, a Critics' Circle Theatre Award, and a Laurence Olivier Award.]
She is "average" sized for her age and station in life. (She lives alone and does not cook, but has an adequate income, so she overly consumes on bread, cakes, cookies, cheese, and processed foods; food items that are convenient out of a bag or box. She also has a propensity for ice cream and good whiskey. She is not a nutritionist and her idea of "eating healthy" is take out fried chicken or kabobs. Remember when Joe had an apple as a snack and she had an ice cream cone?)
One of my most clever college professors didn't own an iron. She would show up in khaki pants that looked like they had been taken out of the washer and dried "wet" at the bottom of the basket. She wore blue striped men's shirts with a holey green sweater (all the time). Her hair was NEVER combed and she would wander off in mid-sentence. But, she was a genius who knew everything.
I understand every word Vera says; she is from Kent (an area not known for strong accents). Brenda Blethyn is educated and worked for a living before acting.
Her character does not solve the case until the "end" because THAT IS HOW COP SHOWS (AND MYSTERIES) ARE WRITTEN!!! Sherlock Holmes doesn't solve cases until the end; neither does Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Tom Barnaby, Christopher Foyle, Dr. Blake, or Father Brown. [Solving cases is formulaic; there are a number of "slots" that must be filled and certain questions answered; that's how detectives work; there is no "aha" until the case is completely solved; when the paperwork is totally completed.]
Since the show is gauged as very successful, have you ever considered that it just isn't something that interests or entertains you? And that we don't like the same thing? I would NEVER watch anything with Barbra Streisand, or use drugs, or consume margarine, or buy a Dr. Pepper, but I totally understand that others do and I recognize their choices. Try ignoring what other enjoy; it doesn't hurt a bit.
