"Coming-of-age" movie or teen movie?

I know "coming-of age" is kinda a euphemism these days for French movies about teenage girls that actually appeal mostly to dirty old men. But, hey, to thine own self be true, and really BOTH kinds of movies feature hot actresses who are typically north of 18 anyway. I don't think ANY guy of any age would really kick Halston Sage or Zoey Deutsch out of bed for eating crackers. The young adult actresses are simply a little more likely to get naked in "coming of age" movies.

Nevertheless, speaking as a former teenager, I vastly preferred--even back then-- "coming of age" films like "River's Edge" to pandering teen bullsh*t like the John Hughes-Molly Ringwald movies. And even if I still was a teen, I think I'd prefer "coming-of-age" films like "Diary of a Teenage Girl" and "Ask Me Anything" to teen dreck like "Twilight". "Coming-of-age" films are ultimately about growing up and becoming an adult while teen films are about staying in some adolescent fairy-tale never-never land.

It is encouraging this is premiering at Sundance as opposed to 10,000 multiplexes across the US. It will be more encouraging if it ends up being rated R. And it will REALLY encouraging if it has full-frontal nude scenes, but that's too much to hope for--after all it's not a FRENCH movie. But before you call me a "perv, consider that Zoey Deutsch's MOTHER, Lea Thompson, had full frontal nudity in her first movie, "All the Right Moves". That was certainly a stupid 80's teen film, but back then even stupid teen films were less useless than the ones today.

Neither. It's a teen movie in the sense that it has a lead who is a teen, but it's not a typical story about high school. And no, it's definitely not a coming of age movie.

I gotta risk my life(LOL) and agree (mostly) with your critiques of John Hughes-Molly Ringwald flicks, and also agree with your praise of Halston Sage and Zoey Deutsch! (So fine.)

Although I gotta say that I adore "Twilight" but just the same love "Vampies Suck" (lol).

aprilkepne:
It's a teen movie that is like Groundhog Day done as a rather horror film.
