What is it with Britsh films + using guns??

Don't get me wrong, the film on the surface looked good, with a decent cast and a fairly exciting storyline (albeit used once or twice in the past), but it made me turn off when I saw them running around with guns in London.
Why not set this thriller in a different location where the use of armed police is prevalent?

I heard some (innocent) Brazilian guy got shot by the police at a subway station some years ago in London. But you Internet warriors know better.

The reason is listed below in the spoiler section. Being from the States, I thought it was interesting to see cops operate w/o guns. McAvoy had to sign out a gun. Later he is surprised to see that one of his cop friends is armed. It was kind of cool. A rather different dynamic.

The point of the film--what started the chain of events--was the fact that London police are not well-armed. This is why the division chief went criminal. If he does this, the other guy gets elected and the police can have soem artilary.

There are more armed police in London than anywhere else in England.

Its that man again!!

There are now many special units in the UK Police .

These include Gun units, Howitzer and Grenade units, Folk Dancing unit, Bakery and Flower arranging unit, and three Gay units -all with separate special uniforms.

There are also a few-believed currently to be 2- that are concerned with Crime and the arrest and detention of criminals. though one may be phased out as part of the current cost-cutting exercise. It is critical to the future of UK policing that criminals be left to commit crimes thus creating an environment where an increase in police numbers is demanded by the public. In the interim proceeds of crime are shared and often deposited overseas-allegedly.

And so it goes.

Hey OP, notice there are more than a dozen replies here and none of them answered your question? By the way, I'm not going to answer your question either.

Until I watched the BBC show Luther, I had no idea that normal policemen in Britain don't carry sidearms. It was so weird to see Luther walking into dangerous situations without a gun. Like you're naked if you're a cop without a gun.

Neither Max, nor any of the other cops (that I saw) carried a gun anyway -- he had to rent it out from the precinct. They showed him nabbing a gun from one of the policeman from the special armed unit.
