What is it with Britsh films + using guns??

Don't get me wrong, the film on the surface looked good, with a decent cast and a fairly exciting storyline (albeit used once or twice in the past), but it made me turn off when I saw them running around with guns in London.
Why not set this thriller in a different location where the use of armed police is prevalent?

reply

Kind of the whole point of the movie.

reply

>implying no armed police or gun crime in london

u wot m8?

reply

There are armed police, but normal police are not armed. The main characters in this are normal police.

reply

yeah and the motorbike scene was ridiculous, why didn't they set it in a city where they actually use motobikes?

reply

U wot m8? Have you ever been to london? There are loads of motorbikes - cops and civilians.

reply

you're kidding...

reply

erm no I'm not, you obviously are kidding, or you have never been to London, why would you think we don't have motorcycles here? A quick google will confirm

well yes I obviously was kidding. nice research though... m8

bit of a pathetic attempt at taking the piss out of someones writing style

reply

Lol, I'd love to know if chrisleary heard the 'whoosh!' sound as your comments flew over his head. Londoners are a lot more stupid than they used to be when I lived down there.

Ya Kirk-loving Spocksucker!

reply

There are around 100,000 motorbikes registered in London.

reply

The sarcasm in this post is ridiculous, why didn't you post it on a forum where people actually use sarcasm?

reply

Pardon my ignorance, please.
Is it only in London where the police are not armed, or is it true for the whole of UK ?

I'm Asian and not knowledgeable about things like this about London.
And I did like the film as an entertaining action movie.

Thank you very much to anyone who'd care to enlighten me.

All police forces in the UK do not use guns. Only armed units are allowed to use guns and trained for it.
Uniformed officers and detectives do not use guns at all. They do not even use tasers. At most they would have a batton or nightstick.

It's a piece of Fiction and some detectives do carry guns, the flying squad do carry guns for specific busts where it is needed to carry a firearm. It's not like the main characters are regular bobbys, these guys are trained in the use of fire arms, especially seeing as they're part of the robbery/homicide division. It's not unusual for police to carry guns in the U.K. In fact the armed police units are issued with SIG-Sauers and Glock-17.

reply

Thanks a lot for the replies.
So based on the two responses that I got to my question, am I correct to say that generally regular policemen do not carry guns, but there is a special unit that is permitted to do so for specific purpose/s ?

reply

that's correct. Regular police use CS Spray and Batons.

And a whistle....

-'Human intelligence' is an oxymoron-

reply

Ummm they do use tasers. All the time. The main reason they don't use them as often as they'd probably like is that every time a taser is used to safely subdue an aggressive, violent and often drunk and mindless person it's criticised as if that person was just minding their own business walking down the street. It's true they're more likely to use a baton or CS spray, although street patrol units more commonly carry a cosh now as it's lighter and can still do some nasty damage.

While regular coppers don't have guns, armed police are becoming a more regular occurrence simply because firearm offences are becoming a more regular occurrence. Also, since most of the criminals in the UK now think the police are a useless joke, I wouldn't be surprised if a few G36's make them pay attention.

@freemantle_uk
'All police forces in the UK do not use guns.'

Special units aside, still not correct, as police officers in Northern Ireland carry a sidearm.

reply

Not true. The PSNI (Northern Ireland police, formally the RUC) all carry guns.

reply

Rubbish, there are armed plainclothes units as well.

reply

The PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland) routinely carry a side arm, a Glock 17. And when they're going to known trouble spots or running border patrols they bring out a lot more toys to play with.

It's unfortunate, and I'd much rather we moved towards unarmed Police than have the rest of the UK get armed, but even just a couple of days ago a couple of PSNI were fired upon after being called out to a false burglary report.

reply

I get what you mean. This also applies to The Sweeney, which also had the police running around with guns. Just didn't look right.

reply

There are quite a few special armed units of the police in the UK and they have been known to go about shooting people (usually unarmed innocents). The British like to keep the myth that their 'bobbies' dont use guns but its becoming more commonplace nowadays. The ruling classes feel a need for arming the police just in case their 'austerity measures' backfire and cause anti-capitalist revolution.

reply

Totally agree,it seems more common to see armed units on the streets these days than normal police on the beat.

reply

maybe to appeal to Americans. we love shooting the hell out of things, London crime stories and we won't let pesky facts interfere with entertainment.

Conforming fully to the American stereotype.

Congratulations on being predictable and having the blind luck to be born in the USA yet not taking advantage of many of those benefits.

reply

LMAO @ the troll pretending to be an idiot American. It was actually the Russians who saved the world from the Nazis in ww2 but as americans seem to get all their knowledge of history from dumb action movies I wouldn't be surprised if they are ignorant of the fact that the eastern front tied up more than 90 percent of the german forces. The germans lost millions of men on the Eastern front and only a few thousands on the Western front.

reply

Don't know if your being a troll.... but

Maybe you should watch a nice doco called
"Oliver Stone's Untold History of the United States"

Have a go ol wake up. You didn't win WW2, the soviets did, 80-90% of the war happened on the eastern front, that you then turned on them with the threat with your new nuclear bombs and then thus started the cold war. Because your government wanted its own version of British Imperialism that's even lasted till this day with the ol chestnut of Iraq has WMD's guise to get more army bases in the Middle East.

Another point, Your armies are relatively poorly trained, and you heavily rely on technology [drones] and numbers/money [links back to tech, to counter actual training]. All points are moot if you actually wanted to go over to the UK and actually wanted to take control.

It would be like another grand victory like Vietnam for you fellas. [Use 6-8 times the fire power of WW2 combined against a force that would rather die than be in control by an enemy force, to then leave your apparent allies for dead, then push out to the masses that you actually won] Pitty you Americans never learn from history, cause it does seem like you like to repeat it.

Now im not from the UK, im just educated.

reply

London is a city of 8 million plus people, although it is relatively peaceful on the surface it does have it's seedy underbelly if you scratch just below the surface. Crime gangs do operate, most notoriously the ''Yardies'',(look these facts up for yourself.)

The Police force there are not routinely armed as they are just about everywhere else the world over, although there are specially trained firearms units, often armed with Gloc 9mm pistols and H&K MP 5 Submachineguns most commonly, though in the normal course of life you they are rarely seen.

Everything will be OK in the end, if it aint OK,it aint the end.
