Why did they kill the guy at the end?

I don't get why they killed the guy at the end. He was his brother-in-law right? Everyone else had some or little reason to be killed but why kill his brother-in-law? He was never bad to Jamie as far as I saw. Was it just that at that point they were doing it for thrills? I know they killed the dim witted kid for thrills in a way but he had a "defect" so they had a reason. Sorry if I missed something. I tend to stop and start my movies like when I get hungry and stuff.

Thanks

They never killed anyone for any reason other than money. John manipulated Jamie into thinking that they were some child avengers, but the stolen credit card from the junkie and the stolen disability checks from the "spastic" just pointed me toward money being the motive.

From what I've read, the real John Bunting hated the brother-in-law David Johnson, because he thought he was pretentious and smug, so he tortured and killed him. It hints at this in the movie when David comes over and John comments on him have a problem with his glass being dirty and on his 'flash' new shoes.

Bunting was the head of a murderous cult and they prey on the weak and defenseless, which David most certainly was.
