What exactly was Kay doing with the white family in Melbourne?

Had she been adopted by them?

I thought it was pretty obvious that those white women were just friends and at a Tupperware party (popular during the 1960s and the 1970s). They probably didn't realise Kay was a member of the Stolen Generation.

So she'd actually been adopted into the family? Or was she a servant...?

She was adopted. As Gail explained to Dave in the film, the government men abducted 10-year-old Kay from hospital--and gave her away to an adoptive white family. Since then, Kay grew up in a white family and the white environment (white friends, white school, etc).

That really did happen in real life. More info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stolen_Generations

I thought that she and the white woman were hosting the Tupperware party. She was an adult who worked as a nurse.

? That's what I said in my previous post.

I was explaining to the other poster that white women at Kay's Tupperware party were just friends. The other white woman, the one who went to the door, was clearly Kay's close friend and that she didn't know Kay was part of the Stolen Generation. It was a secret Kay kept from her.

This answer is correct of course, and the only one that understands the cultural issues. Kay looked white enough to fit in at a Melbourne Victorian piss-elegant Tupperware party, but gladly the girls' call to her door inspired her back towards her black roots, along with the music, the competitiveness and her liking for cool clumsy black soldier dudes. No coconut, she!

You obviously didn't pay attention to the story, or any of the Aboriginal history at the beginning of the movie, or you would know the answer. It was explained twice.

reply

Don't you feel better now about setting him straight? It really added to the answer.

reply

Get over yourself. Your friend wasn't paying attention and was rightly called out on it.

Just to say, Kay wasn't a Nurse. She was a Cleaner in the hospital.

reply

I'm glad she made peace with her family at the end of the film.

She was kidnapped by government devil worshipers.
