Top 3 reasons why this live action remake is an improvement over the 1950 cartoon

Now, I liked the 1950 cartoon when I was a kid and it's a good Disney flick, but it wasn't without it's problems. The Tom and Jerry humor involving Jacques, Gus Gus, and Lucifer, is just total filler that didn't further the plot, the side characters, as entertaining as they are, took up the majority of the film when it's clearly called Cinderella (not to mention putting the main title character in the background), and the prince character was just a bore who yawned, sang "So This Is Love" and had 15 lines of dialogue before he and Cinderella got married. So upon seeing this remake back in 2015 with my brother and being surprised by it, it's a good example of a live action remake improving on the cartoon while also doing something different. Here are 5 reasons why.

1) Character depth: Considering this was directed by Kenneth Branagh (who disappointed us with that godawful Artemis Fowl movie five years later), he did a very good job giving some character depth to not only fleshing out Cinderella and the Stepmother, but also the Prince who was acted very well by Richard Madden of Game of Thrones fame. He's funny, he's charismatic, and interacts very well with everyone in the kingdom including the Grand Duke, the Captain, and his father the king played wonderfully by Derek Jacobi (I was gonna make a Secret of NIMH reference considering the same actor voiced Nicodemus, but it'd be WAY too disturbing to imagine a cartoon rat being a king. Well, turns out I just did.) Even his chemistry with Lily James is beautiful which gives them a very good dynamic in comparison to the cartoon. Speaking of the actress, Lily James did a good as Cinderella. Now I know some people called her portrayal bland when compared to the cartoon, but considering the original Cinderella was kept in the background, it was nice to see her given something a little more to do. Now, the original Cinderella is a good character, don't get me wrong. She was patient and knew when to be angry. I just wish she could've been fleshed out more (until Cinderella III: A Twist in Time, that is), which the remake does exceptionally well here. Even Cate Blanchett did a fantastic job as Lady Tremaine. She nailed the snobbish cold abusive personality while also being sympathetic. Even the other actors did a good job on their roles even Nonso Anozie as the Captain. Oh, and Helena Bonham Carter did a good job as the Fairy Godmother who was pretty funny

2) Compelling Story: The story does pay some homages to the 1950 cartoon, but on it's own, it's well written. It knew when to have quiet dramatic moments while also balancing it with the light-hearted tone of the movie. Not to mention it puts less emphasis on the Tom and Jerry humor. The beginning of the movie established the character of Cinderella and her interaction with her parents before her mother passed away. The one scene that where her mother says to Cinderella as she gets ill, "Have Courage and Be Kind.", it gives Cinderella a good character arc that payed off in the end of the movie where she not only stood up to Lady Tremaine for her cold abusive treatment (which represents courage), but she also forgives her and her two daughters Drizella and Anastasia (who was given some character depth in Cinderella III: A Twist in Time), who apologized to her after she put the glass slipper on. Those moments are exactly why the story in this remake is an improvement over the cartoon.

3) Wonderfully Visualized: The use of colors in this movie are superb and don't get too muted. The castle, Cinderella's house, the village, and the carriage chase sequence. Even the CGI wasn't that bad at all especially the pumpkin transformation and the blue dress. Even the costumes and make up are well designed which fits the setting the film very well including the glass slippers. Even the CGI mice had some expressions (looking at you, Lion King remake).
