Worst friend EVER

I couldn't figure out what was wrong with the cast. The entire village were a bunch of *beep* even her friend was about the worst possible friend she could have.

I was upset her friend wasn't killed, she was a scumbag from the opening scene and only got worse.

reply

Agreed, I couldnt get over how selfish and cruel the friend was, I wanted her and the Aunt to die a very miserable death. Even when she was fighting the husband her useless friend just stood and observed like a mannequin, and when they showed the other messed up thing she did......just plain evil.

reply

Real bitch!!!

The funny thing is, that she wasn't evil. Not at all. Sometimes she was even honestly kind to Bok-nam - but only when it required no effort. She was just selfish and careless.

The frightening thing is that she was a perfectly realistic character. There are many, many people like her.

A Fantastic but grim film with a fantastic central performance from Seo Young-hee. She totally is the heart and soul of this film. The last third is the most brutal I've seen in a film.

Onto Hae-Won, I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt that they were hoping that she died. I can see what they were trying to do at the end, but for me she was past redemption at that point. When she read those letters, i felt bad Bok-nam more so then anyone else. Her punishment is she has to live with the guilty that she was one big main reason her friend died, sure she didn't beat or rape her but she betrayed her friend in many other ways. Also before she went to the island the way she slapped the young employee (then tried to save her Job by texting that she was sorry rather then out of guilt, great that she was fired) and the old lady with the loan was disgusting. The bit that made her beyond hateable was when Bok-nam with her daughter dead looks up on the hill and sees her friend watching not doing a thing and walks off in disgust. Even when she was young she was horrible to Bok-nam.

But that's what i loved about this film, in a Hollywood film a character like Hae-Won would be redeemed by saving Bok-Nam when she was been beaten at the end by her husband and getting her off the island with her daughter. But nope not in this, she's no hero and i don't think the director or writer were saying that she was (i hope so anyway lol). Even the scene when she shopped the villains who beat the woman to death, I didnt care either way cause she was unredeemable by that point.

Even though she killed many people (all scumbags in their own way) i still felt more sorrow for Bok-nam then Hae-won.

I hated just about all of them except for Bok-nam. But I think the one I hated the most was that old "Aunt" with the short hair and the big effin mouth. She really got under my skin.

Agree, she should have killed her!!! sorry but she was a liar from the start and selfish. I just don't know why she was such a bitch? we never found out

reply

I agree with all of you, and as much as I wanted her to be killed a horrible death, I actually understood why she was unwilling to help. Anyone heard of the bystander effect? She had good reason to be afraid at the police station. The gangster threatened her and being in her situation I wouldn't know if police protection would be enough for me.

She also had a reason to be afraid at the island, even if she did tell the police officer, the islanders would have outnumbered all 3 three of them. While it doesn't justify her actions, we don't know what other people are capable of. I think her being a bitch was her way of protecting herself.

***SPOILER ALERT***

I agree about the bystander effect from personal experience. Some people are either too afraid or too self-centered to get involved. I think the only reason she (Hae-won) lives is because, despite her despicable behavior throughout, in the end her character undergoes an epiphany when she realizes what a POS she had been to Bok-nam. Evidenced by her stepping up to accuse the gangsters and then reading the unopened letters from Bok-nam. We're supposed to believe that in the end she changed and so there is hope for humanity.

This movie was intense! Definitely not for the squeamish. The acting by the lead actress was superb.

They showed earlier that the City friend was selfish and a bad person. First one she didn't give the poor Grandma a loan and second, she didn't point out the killers even when the father was begging her.

reply

Yeah i hated that she lived. Worst friend a person could have. What a bitch.

I was expecting Sae-Won to have the most miserable death of all.The end dissapointed me.Also The cop that shoot at the end reminded me classic Holywood plot and ruined everything.Sae-Won had also an awful performance in movie. So it would be wise to kill her from begining.Haha!

reply

Yes she is pretty bad, but then this is a film and the filmmakers made her that way. Think about real life how many of us may not come to the aid or others or just ignore those in need. We all could be guilty of it in some way. Heck some of us may not always help our own friends or even family. The so called friend in the very end especially when she was finally reading those letters probably helped sink in that feeling of really letting someone down big time! In the end she was probably in some level somewhat devastated by how things turned out and that she would have to live with her inaction the rest of her life. Not a real happy ending, but to me a pretty haunting one and powerful one. So I guess there is somewhat of a lesson for us real life people in all of that story. ;)
