Sally's Mother?!

Any reason why Sally's mom was overly attractive (not that I'm complaining) and flirty with George, even right in front of her daughter? She was showing a lot of cleavage, touching his leg and asking awkward questions. I almost expected a scene where she tries to kiss him behind Sally's back.
I just found it unnecessary.

Sally's mom got involved with men early in life (she had Sally when she was 16 years old), and has lived and thrived financially by choosing ones who could take her places, in style, with money. She's a very sexually driven woman, and enjoys teasing and having fun with men; she enjoys seeing her effect on them, and the power over them she can wield. She also appears to enjoy playing "outrageous," and seeing how people respond. So why wouldn't she enjoy toying with, and discombobulating, a handsome, dewy, fresh-faced and sweet boy like George, especially given that, in that scene, she's feeling no pain, has had a presumably fun night of games with a man, and can play with her daughter's emotions in the bargain? At that moment, it's just silliness -- flirtatious fun to her.

I think the character of the mom goes a long way to explaining the tendencies of the daughter.

It's like the daughter has to work very hard to not be like her mom - and the question at the end of the movie is - "Can she do it?"

It's just the way she was and it would (probably) be fun to know as long as no one takes it too seriously. In her defence she also recognised that George was one of the good guys and warned Sally against playing with his affections - not that I think this is what Sally was actually doing.
