Why would they make a sequel?????

I didn't think this film made any money in North America. Did it make money abroad? I find that hard to believe. When I saw it on television I don't think I laughed once and I loved a lot of Rowan Atkinson's past work, but I wasn't a fan of Mr. Bean as a spy.

It is a British movie, therefore North America IS abroad. I know it's almost impossible for any Yank to believe, but the world does NOT end at the coastline of the US.

Excuse me, I am from the US and I love and prefer British humor...
I happened to have enjoyed this movie very much, I think Rowan Atkinson is hilarious in almost everything.

My concern is that we will see yet another big studio sequel with another "too many cooks spoil the broth" scenario, ruining what was set up in the first film and by trying too hard for a laugh by mixing lots of money, thin plot, while at the same time lacking the spark, cleverness of the first, while at the same time, Americanizing the humor, and having the marketing people dictate the script resulting in a big budget yawn festival. Because of this I rarely, if ever, watch anything at the cineplex anymore. I loved the first "JE", but now, it appears we have yet another "save the world" over the top, hollywood extravaganza sequel. Big budgets, loads of effects, stunts and assuming the viewing public to be dumber than rocks. Let's hope this is not the case.

Many of those who replied missed that the OP said 'North America', not 'The U.S.', so that includes Canada, a former member of your Commonwealth.

I, for one, am a fan of Rowan Atkinson, having first heard of him from an early comedy album in 1989/90, which then sent me on a hunt for his work when I returned to the U.S. I catch all of his films, shows and specials whenever possible.

i thought the first one was kind of funny. "jesus is coming, look busy"

Lol Canada is still part of the Commonwealth. If they weren't they wouldn't have the queen on their currency or as head of state.

I like Rowen Atkinson too, but the first Johnny English was terrible. It's not a case of me not getting British humor either, because I love a lot of stuff coming from over there.

My thoughts exactly. Like Weekend at Bernie's II, it's like the studio heads didn't get the memo that the first movie sucked, and that people aren't likely to flock to the theater for more suckiness. Considering that the first movie only cost $35 million to make, getting $140 million worldwide should actually be considered a dubious achievement. Almost 10 years after the first movie's release, ticket prices have doubled, and nobody is going to want to pay $10 to see crap. The studio probably had to shell out probably closer to $70 million this time, since it's lead would probably demand a larger salary, among other things. Boy, are they gonna be upset when this thing flops.

.....it is a BRITISH film.
A film's worth isn't judged by whether North America takes to it, especially when it is a British film.

And the first film is amazing<3

Sequels are fine for us/those who enjoyed the first, but my question is WHY OH WHY would the free world worry about the assassination of the premier of the most murderous regime in the history of the world??? Just under Mao, it's estimated that 70 million Chinese citizens died, many by starvation, but a lot more by executions of various types, like 460,000 "intellectuals" buried alive by Mao's orders, which he then bragged about in comparison to the 460 buried by an earlier leader. Then there's the imprisonment, torture and on-going organ harvesting of imprisoned non-violent Falun Gong followers that was started by Jiang Zemin in the 1990s. The governments should ban together to take out the whole Politburo!
