MacFadyen and Claflin look nothing like each other..

Sam has three little moles on his face which suddenly disappeared in 1934 when Matthew took over the role looking FAR too old for a 28-year old. Sam shoulda carried on the part till World war Two or better still they should have cast actors with some resemblance to each other.

Usually I would agree but I think in this case it was intentional. A major theme in the story is about the changing self hence the different actors playing Logan while some of the other actors remain the same despite the time that has lapsed.

reply

I think there's definitely a resemblance. However MacFadyen has a much larger frame/build and that's what's so distracting for me. Claflin was his physical opposite.

I agree with you, this is a deliberate aspect of the story so I found it totally acceptable. The switching out of the actors also does seem to be more of a comment on the 'ages of man' than just switching to make them look age appropriate.

Plus I think they have chosen the best actors for the part in the 3 ages of Logan, surely that is more important than how closely they resemble eachother. To be honest it's MM who's the odd man out physically (as he's 6ft3 and built like a brick s***house and has a much deeper tone of voice than the actors either side of him but he's the one I definately wouldn't want to lose from this production, so far and to find his physical match in either of the other 2 agegroups would narrow the talent field beyond reason. Broadbent is quite tall too I suppose - there you go, they tried.

It's acting but yes, it's a visual medium not like reading a novel so it would be distracting to anyone.

reply

Wasn't distracting for me. The jump was sudden, but it's acted and presented so well that it made no negative impact. As it's been said by others, it fits perfectly with the theme of one person consisting of many 'different selves', and MacFayden is a superb actor anyway.

reply

It's acting. The film maker presumably thought audiences could cope with different actors not looking exactly like each other. This sort of thing causes disturbances among the kind of people who watch telly soaps but one would have thought grown ups could cope OK.

Apparently not.

reply

If you read some of the reviews (which looks like you haven't and your post on here is just a drive by anyway), many prominent critics remark about the stark differences in these three actors. So, in your estimation, they must watch telly soaps and are childish, too.

reply

Oh here we go! Let's start having a pop at each other!

Tell the truth, I didn't think too much about the change in characters as I was gripped by the whole thing. The fact that the narrator is constantly saying he was different people, lends credence to the fact that they chose different people deliberately.

I can also understand why people would find it distracting.
Show me a person, who came to this cold, who didn't think
"The actors look nowt like each other!" and I'll show you someone who is blind, a liar or stupid.

(insert your own vernacular if nowt is not your usual way of emphasising nothing)

And father of both?? - Jim Broadbent? Have you checked for moles? shape of fingernails? shoe size?

Best imagine that this is one of those wonderful productions from BBC Steam Radio 3, when one was able to understand spoken English & could follow a story line.

No distracting soundtrack: no advertising slogans in estuary english;

Just a great story; well told; well acted.

Bravo, William Boyd.

This must be what TV really means; not the dross that is dished out hourly.

Please think about a complete on DVD - not like the abbreviated DVD of "Armadillo" (the VHS version was Brilliant) .

It would be something to keep my spirits up as I nudge towards that chair in La France Profonde & join Logan & his memories.

reply

So I take it you are an upcoming 'Producer' - Obviously it is impossible to get common genes look-a-likes and better than trying to take a young actor and use make up to age him to 80+

Overall a good job done I say so look out for DVD release is you want unfettered interruption - check out 'Release Date' message board.

PS was Mat Mac good or what ?

CGI??? Are you high? It's not a "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" Hollywood showboat for goodness' sake. It's about the story, script and performances. Everything else (production design, costume, hair&makeup etc) is a "nice to have" to sit it comfortably within its setting. They picked the best actors for the job in the 3 ages of Logan and that's fine by me - I don't need them all wearing a flashing neon sign over their heads saying "BTW - I'm Logan" to follow what's going on.

So what. Everyone knows it's a different person anyway. Do you really think they can find quality actors who look alike? Very unreasonable.
