Duke of Windsor sub-plot

I thought the sub-plot about the late Duke of Windsor being mixed up in a murder case was a bit far fetched - until I found out most of it is based on fact!

Scabrous little *beep*

I thought it was quite interesting. I had no idea about that case until I saw this episode. I think Tom Hollander is fantastic as the Duke. And Gillian Anderson, WOW! She totally dissolves in Wallis.

Its a well-known fact that the Duke of Windsor was an odious man - being a Nazi sympathiser was the least of his sins. Lucky for the Royal Family that he abdicated the throne and saved them from further embarrassment.

reply

His abdication was more in the manner of 'resign or get the push'. Note that the last 'King' who tried to put his weight about got shortened by a head.

Neither of the first two Charlies augur well for the third.

if you check out Wikapedia is not so far off !

Good job not King in UK during war era (1939/45)as apparently had Nazi sympathies and Wallace very passive ?

New film out with Colin Firth worth watching regarding the era 1938 abdication - "The Kings Speech" might bring further info. Great revues on IMDb so far. (ADDED 21st February - since seen The Kings Speech - indeed well worth watching !

It almost seemed like he had a mental disorder by the way he was played, dragonlady92. Perhaps he did.

He was only for Hitler when he thought Hitler would go east and destroy Communism. He changed his ways when he knew Hitler was planning on attacking Western Europe and the UK. In fact, he was sent to the Bahamas to keep him safe from a Nazi plan to kidnap him, and left Portugal barely missing the henchman who were coming for him. He had to flee France when Germany occupied it.

reply

Heh, he had to be threatened by Churchill into boarding that ship in Portugal. He stalled and stalled, and got the nazis to give them permission to send a maid back to Paris to retrieve their effing bed linen.
