Why the hell did Buddy do this?! And what about poor Matt?

I'm mega confused. Buddy obviously wasn't the brightest bulb in the tanning bed because he didn't seem to recognize at all that Mavis was trying to win him back. But, after she dropped him home from their night out drinking, he freaking kissed her. Why did he do this? And how on Earth did it not occur to him afterwards that perhaps he had led Mavis on, or that she would take his kiss as a sign of his affection? He obviously knew her well enough to know how intense and obsessive she was, so what the hell was he thinking? Was he not worried she would tell Beth? If he was so happy with Beth, what was his motivation for kissing Mavis? I don't think being drunk was truly the main factor. What do you guys think?

Also, Mavis obviously slept with Matt on her last night in Mercury, then she seemingly just took off back home without even speaking to him. Matt was there to support her emotionally, why could she not at least maintain a friendship with him? She obviously lacked friends and seemed to enjoy his company, why would she not stay in touch with him? I know, it's a Borderline thing (trust me, I know), but it just kind of seemed a bit strange that she wouldn't even just keep him hanging around for the simple fact that he stroked her ego. Thoughts?

1) When he kissed her he was drunk, I guess he didn't really want to. Plus when they got interrupted by the babysitter he immediately went inside and probably thought it was all a huge mistake, he didn't even looked back to her. Also, later when he calls Mavis to invite her to the ceremony, he's clearly unconfortable, like someone else was forcing him to do it.

2) Mavis never really learned anything from what happened. She went back to Minneapolis and continued to act just like before. That moment with Matt was totally ruined by Sandra's speech the next day. Sandra too was "stuck in high school" and, to her, Mavis' life was a dream. That speech was like an "ego booster" to Mavis, that's why she said something like "I really needed that" and then when Sandra asked her to go to Minneapolis, Mavis went back to the "high school queen" attitude and told her to stay in Mercury, where she belonged.

That was the impression I got :)

It was only a kiss, she initiated it, and he was so drunk he could barely stand up. It didn't mean anything.
