The main scene that still pisses me off...

...was when Shawna came up to Lily with her brother and all her friends. And Lily just denied everything, didn't try to explain the situation(although with how Shawna acted in the first place, she probably wouldn't have cared), and didn't defend herself. I understand that there were other girls there and they probably would have all shown their weakness by ganging up on Lily had she retaliated after Shawna spit on her. But come on! I don't know, that whole scene just really made me want to rip my hair out.

The exchange and the exchange between Lily and Allison immediately following the incident indicate that this type of interactions is not out of the ordinary for Shawna. If Shawna is repeatedly bullying Lily, it's completely normal for Lily to shut down.

This is also an example of Lily's psychology as a victim. Victim's tend to shut down when someone bigger and more powerful than them begin exerting power on them, and often hope for other people to come help them, which is why she was angry at Allison for not coming to her rescue. This same psychology also leads to victims trying to establish their own dominance over other people who aren't strong enough to retaliate, which is why she had been so aggressive to Shawna's brother in the first place.

I still believe that peace and plenty and happiness can be worked out some way. I am a fool.

Yeah, that all sounds very academic and scholarly, but misses the mark by a mile. I agree with the OP - Lily would not have stood passively by, even surrounded by multiple "enemies", in that situation. It was completely out of character for her, and took me out of the film for a while.

But then, the whole movie left me with no reaction. Some bits of style, but no substance. Good movies stick with you long after you see them. I just finished this one, and it will be forgotten by morning.
