other sequels to cult movies that left it too long and bombed

Blade Runner 2

they made the mistake of coming out way too long after the original thinking that the originals cult status would mean Austin Powers 2 box office. but ZL2 and those movies probably would've been huge had they come out a couple of years after the original like Austin 2 did (or in BR2049s case maybe in mid 1990s when BR was really popular again due to the Directors Cut)

other cult movies that would suffer a similar fate if they decided to do a long awaited sequel would be the likes of Fight Club 2, American Psycho 2 (I know there was a stdvd sequel but talking about a proper one with Christian Bale)

it can also apply to blockbusters (see ID4:R) in fact I wonder if the same will happen to Avatar 2 (not that A2 will bomb but maybe it'll make only like half of A1)
