I just watched this, and I agree. FX like these are like stage magic: they happen in real time, in the real world. I’ve been doing CGI as a hobby for 20 years, and it’s fascinating because, once you digitize information, you can do anything you want with it, if you know how. But doing something like making a real elephant disappear in front of a live, in-person audience (as Harry Houdini did)—THAT’S something special. It’s probably a whole hell of a lot more exciting for the on-set crew, because they’re part of it. It’s happening right in front of them. It’s nothing like the director saying to the actor, “Fred, in this scene, you’re running for your life from ‘Rapters and red dragons, so I want you to look over your shoulder, scream, and then run faster. Now, stand in front of this green screen . . . .”
