Best Movie of All?

Since Allen is generally regarded as the best director among his peers, and they regard "Midnight in Paris" as his best work, that'd make this film the best ever, right? I think it just may be.

I liked the romance of Manhattan and Annie Hall. Woody and Diane were so sweet together. These movies were also a lot funnier than Midnight in Paris. And in general I like Woody's movies better when he is also acting in them.

I don't like Woody Allen movies. Loved this movie. So, obviously, his best for me. Best of all time, no, but almost in the conversation.

reply

It's a pleasant movie, but hardly among his best.

reply

It's badly constructed and unnecessarily obvious, the writing is inconsistent, the characters are generally weak, and it fails to say anything much at all. Most of the historical characters are pretty well done, though occasionally they come across as caricatures, but even they can't save the movie. It's not awful, but certainly not the best of all time.

Hannah and her Sisters.. there is something special about it that isn't in this Midnight in Paris. I will say that Gil Pender is one of his most interesting characters.

Annie Hall. Diane Keaton and Woody Allen and the 70's. The one-liners, old NY, the story...and the touching ending monologue. Seriously...Annie Hall is top ten all-time and a complete game changers in how and why movies and TV was made.

Midnight in Paris...for any other director would be a master-stroke but for Woody..it is what you expect. Match Point was just as good, maybe better than Midnight in Paris.

My Top-Ten

1. Hannah and Her Sister
2. Annie Hall
3. Bullets over Broadway
4. Husbands and Wives
5. Mighty Aphrodite
6. Midnight in Paris
7. Match Point
8. New York Stories
9. Crimes and Misdemeanors
10 Broadway Danny Rose

I truly think Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and her Sisters, Radio Days, Stardust Memories, Crimes and Misdemeanors, & Small Time Crooks are all better than this but to each his/her own.

Just no

Seriously not even close. And Woody Allen is not the best director ever, nor should he be in the conversation of top five. He's very good, don't get me wrong, but a list of best ever would not even need to consider him for more than a few moments.

reply

Pretty hard to beat Annie Hall and Manhattan, though I enjoy this one every time I see it.
