Is anyone going to try the UK version, now that this is over?

I've been thinking about trying the UK version, however its going to be hard accepting new characters, I have this feeling there is no way they could be as likeable as our Sally, Josh and Aiden! But I figured I might as well give it a shot.

Anyone who hasn't seen the UK version have the same thought, or does anyone that has seen it have anything good/bad to say about it?

Thoughts!

The characters and story are good in the UK (original) from seasons 1-3. From seasons 4-5, it's only the characters that are good.

Whitehouse destroyed the worldbuilding he did and adopted more American fare or I should say flare to tell his story which doesn't suit what he tried to do originally as far as I'm concerned.

Also I have to say that, though it's really a separate entity with the same name, the original pilot of Being Human UK was awesome for how dark it was.

When I first came across Being Human (US Version) in its, I had no idea it was originally a UK show...though I realized after viewing the first season and as now needed to wait for the next season on the US show I started in on the UK version and liked both though admitedly my favorite was the US version. I also stopped watched the UK version after Mitchell died and having read that they eventually killed off the rest of the cast as well. I had no interest in watching anymore after that.

I did more the pity since I loathed the wolf couple of the USA version so much people can attest how much I hated!

Yeah I stopped watching when Mitchell died then George!

I just tuned in when Adam made a guest appearance and Regu was on!

HAHA he was funny!

Mark Williams played him and he was so Freaking funny then after that I stopped stone cold

I started with the UK version and wasn't so sure about the US version at first but I personally think the US version is better. While I love the UK version, there were always a lot of problems that I had a difficult time getting past. The way they handled the abilities/rules/world when it came to ghosts was inconsistent and occasionally hoakey. Again, I love the UK version but the US version was really good a having things progress naturally, keeping characters relatively consisted, etc...

But they pulled too much for the last episodes and it just felt rushed you know

reply

I totally agree that the last couple episodes felt rushed, but do you think it was because they found out they were canceled and wanted to end it the way the had always planned? I think it was always leading up to the events in the last episode, but if they had more time things would've been more fleshed out. I definitely think that the Kenny storyline would've gone on longer and ditto with the new pack. I think they would've kept the pack around for a while and when they were finally killed off by Josh it would've been even more intense. Same with Sally and Aidan's relationship and Sally giving herself up for Aidan. It would've been fleshed out and drawn out a bit more. I think it was always leading to Sally and Aidan getting together, there were moments throughout the show where you could see them feel a bit of a spark but they held it off because they were friends. Its jus that in the end they were cancelled and had to cram in all of that in a couple episodes. It stinks but it is what it is.

The original plan for the show was a 5 season run. But the show was bought out, and the budget, which was already barely adequate, was dropped to the point where it just wasn't workable to produce the show and maintain any level of quality. So they pitched the idea to the network to scrap season 5, and do just one more decently funded season. The network accepted the change, and that's what we got.

I agree in that I think the finale was always going to be what we saw there, but the span of time they got to build up to it was drastically cut short. It seemed like Kenny, Blake, and Susanna all had their stories severely truncated. I'm also guessing that Sally's time traveling was to take place in the original season 4, and then she and Aidan would be together in all of season 5. Again, unfortunately, budget cuts made them squish the last two seasons together, and though the end product did feel a little rushed, it was still well worth it, and a good send off to the show. Being a Toby Whithouse creation, I was surprised and amazed at the happy ending!

It DID NOT WORK

Then why did they continue to Season 4? If the money was not there in season 3?

I never even knew this show existed in the US.

I watched the original UK pilot before some members were recast and before the show was commissioned for a full series in the UK. It took the BBC over 3 months to commission this show if I remember correctly and the pilot had outstandingly positive reviews and all the fans lobbied the BBC to commission it. It was touch and go.

I preferred the original cast actually. If you are going to watch the UK version checkout the pilot episode first because it as an essential part of the story but must be weird when watching episode 2 with a different cast.

so why did they change Herrick and Aidan and Annie?

I finally finished Season 4. I still prefer the UK version. The USA version is good, but the UK version had better chemistry and camaraderie. I cried at Mitchell's and George's death.

As I always say I love the Syfy version but the original is my favorite. I mean in the beginning I liked them equally but now that they are both over I can say I enjoyed the UK just a tad bit more.

Oops, I'm just going to copy over what I wrote in another thread a minute ago. I saw the UK version well before the US remake and just couldn't get into it. I wanted to because I liked the idea, but it left me kind of indifferent. I only stumbled across the US version later on, gave it a shot to see how it compared and ended up loving it. I never cared about the characters as much in the original, and Annie really didn't have the same kind of struggle as Sally, whose inability to touch/feel/be seen made a huge difference to what I felt for the ghost.

I just found the US version much better developed, more emotionally engaging and with more exciting subplots and character arcs. I wasn't as drawn to how they handled the characters in the original. For example, in my opinion the Aidan/Bishop arc was much stronger than Mitchell/Herrick, which had an interesting start, then just lost steam and didn't have the same kind of payoff. It's one of those rare cases where I prefer the remake, although the UK series is entertaining in its own way....for a while. I feel it goes completely downhill after a point, but of course everyone's got their own opinions and plenty of people love the original, so there's no reason to not check it out.

I was just coming on this board to see if I should give this version a try! I'm British so I got to see our version from the start when it was aired and it is to this day one of my favourite shows of all time! I love everything about it! I was unsure on the cast changes at first but then I even ended up loving those characters! Trust me, that did not seem likely as I was pretty much in love with the original cast!

I watched the pilot episode of this version, a couple of years ago and wasn't so keen. I found the characters to be too similar which I didn't like because I loved the original characters so much that it seemed weird to me! If the characters had been maybe a bit different, I may have been more intrigued to watch the rest! I was just curious to how they handle the story? Do they handle it very differently or is it pretty much the exact same storylines and characters as the UK one? If it's actually very different I might give it another try! Also, does it have much of the humour from our version? Because that was one my favourite parts about it, that it could have you laughing your head off one minute and then crying the next!
I've always been a fan of/liked Sam Huntington, who plays this shows version of George (who was my favourite character from the UK one) so I was also wondering what he's like in it? Does he do the role justice?

Season one works out a little differently than the original, and from there, the story lines are completely different.

I liked Sam Huntington in this show, but the thing to remember here is that Josh isn't George. None of the characters are exactly like their counterparts. George was much more effeminate than Josh, Aidan was far older than Mitchell, and Sally was smarter and more cynical than Annie.

Also, this version has a lot more episodes because the seasons are longer, are a lot of the episodes basically filler episodes that don’t really have anything to do with the main story or are they all pretty much consistent? I know as a country we don’t tend to make that many episodes per season of any show, but sometimes I think that works a bit better because then the story moves along quicker and you don’t get bogged down with loads of slow, filler episodes.
It's not as long as you think. British seasons consisted of 8 one hour episodes. US seasons are 13 episodes that are approximately 44 minutes long. That puts the total run time for each season at 9 hours 32 minutes, just 1 and 1/2 hours longer than a full UK Season. It stays pretty fast paced.

The humor in this version is, for the most part, more subtle; but it works for the darker story they are trying to tell. Their actions in this version have more cumulative consequences, no reset buttons or changing the frame of the show by drifting to a new location. The mythology is far more consistent in the US version, although nearing the end of the series, it was beginning to exhibit similar problems to UK version in regards to consistency and math. (Most likely because the Being Human creator had wrapped up the UK series and rejoined this one. As much as I have loved and enjoyed the Being Human universe, he certainly has his strengths and weaknesses!)

The UK version started out its characters with an easy love and loyalty for one another, which gave them nowhere to go but down. In the end, there were distances and resentments between them, and they were unable to really protect each other. In the US version, they start out with distance and easy resentments. The characters learn how much they need to support and rely on each other as the series progresses. They become a stronger family unit. I found that aspect to be far more realistic and organic than in the original.

As for how others think they compare... some like one and hate the other. Some like both. The only way you will know how they compare FOR YOU, is to watch them for yourself.

reply

Thank you for the reply! I probably will watch and see how I like it! I'll probably enjoy it if the characters and the story are different, because I just didn't want to be watching an exact copy. It'll be interesting to see their take on it. I doubt I'll ever love it more than the UK version as that one is one of my favourite shows of all time but hopefully I'll still really enjoy it!

just finished the American version earlier this week, and have now started the UK version. i can see the similarities in the initial story-lines, but there are also subtle differences as well, such as the vampire & ghost rules are quite a bit different, not to mention the individual personalities of the cast from both versions.

other differences i've noticed right away is the amount of humor in the UK series, while present in the US version, it is more understated, with the focus on typically darker plot lines.

reply

its very good, and the characters are generally better initially better than their US counterparts. But they burnt out quicker; having little depth - the USA trinity had more depth to them for sure (partly because they had a much longer innings).

theres a gradual decline in quality as with USA show, although replacing characters was on the point of refreshing the show - sadly too late for its "cancellation"
