Eyes Wide Shut (1999) and other influences

I liked this film, the current 5.5 imdb average rating is a disgrace. The film reminded me of some other films, especially Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut (1999). The same slow pace, surreal atmosphere, sexual tension, strange characters and, in particular, the weird "secret society" of rich people who enjoy coming together while being surrounded by naked women. I can perfectly understand the desire to be in bed with a young beauty, even if she is sleeping (or especially if she is sleeping). But what's the motivation to have dinner with friends while being served by naked women. Wouldn't that interfere with the appetite? It's funny that filmmakers find it necessary to invent such secret clubs.

Over the years I have come to learn that it is not possible to try and understand these strange fetishes nor am I no longer shocked or surprised by any of them. One could also ask why a person would pay a dominatrix to beat the crap out of them. I doubt the filmmakers completely made up this notion and the question as to what is going on in the psyche of the practitioners is a mystery that even Freud may have a hard time explaining.

Exactly. Was going to mention EWS before seeing your post. They all seemed to know each other already, so must've been meeting on a regular basis. Same with the staff who all sound like regulars. The references throughout to the seriousness of the proceedings imply the need for discretion and trust. Everyone could do damage if they went public. Reminded me of the pool table scene in EWS, where the underlying threat and menace was obvious.

I thought the topless women serving in the film were wasted. They all look the same which is probably part of the design of the director but if I were dining at such a place I would want the women to look different. Blonde, brunette, red head, slim, curvy, busty, more petite etc

I could enjoy such a thing but the women aren't completely nude and their outfits aren't sexy either. I don't think it would interfere with my appetite at all.

The whole premise for the film is a bit out there and I guess inventing a club where a woman is put to sleep and then held, I can't recall if they have sex with her or not now is just part of the tale and a means of justifying it.
