Was it really like this?

Just started watching it and what I would like to know is are the mannerisms and beliefs of those people in that society exactly as portrayed. I realise that this show is not entirely historically accurate. It is only I really would like to know if this is the true way these people went about their life or were their lives completely different to us. So many aspects of their way of living they take for granted. Pestilence, famine and warfare they understand and that are worldview is coloured by ideas that came about centuries later.
