Worst HBO show ever?

Watched first episode very excited to see and was let down. It was very hard to follow, could barely understand the dialogue, and was bored as well. The only thing that somewhat interested me was the realtionship of the gamblers. I figured a lot of shows start out slow but watched the 2nd episode and it was just as boring. HBO usually puts on top notch programming but this one comes up short.

Have you ever seen Arli$$?

That's the worst HBO show ever.

reply

Arli$$ was one of my favorite shows, ever.

So go figure.

reply

I've never heard anyone say that before, in real life, or online. The uniform consensus amongst HBO viewers is that it's pretty bad.

You never asked this HBO watcher and several of my HBO watching friends because we all really liked Arli$$.

reply

No, I don't think it's worst HBO show ever, but I do think it's the most disappointing they've put in the Sunday night sweetspot, and the dismal ratings seem to reflect that. With so many other choices available today, for the first time I'm actually considering cancelling HBO. I don't like paying these premiums for movie re-runs.

HBo Arli$$. for people that want to die

speaking as an avid fan of the show (and a person with no interest in horses, racing, or gambling) no, its actually one of the best things they've put out, its just not your taste, i hate true blood, but people really like that show, and i can see why, i find it cheesy and unsubstantial, but i'm not the audience that show wants, other people see it and either enjoy the campiness (which actually held me for two seasons till i gave up), or get a genuine emotional connection with it, you just dig what you dig.

i've no idea what you like to watch, but i'd recommend watching up to episode 4 of luck, which i think is the breathrough episode (best one so far anyway, and the pace is alot quicker), if you still dont like it, then its not for you, no harm, your not the audience its looking for.
Hbo is a diversive station, and most of everything they have made is gold.

reply

You are right. The show is not for me. I do see a lot of people that enjoy it so I am going to give it another shot eventually. I struggled getting through the first two episodes of The Wire as well and then ended up watching the entire series in the span of a month and it is the best show ever to be put on TV imo. Just my opinion, I do not mean to offend anyone.

You'a rare bird. As often as not you'll get authorities telling people what's good and what isn't on these forums. And relentless accusations and name calling. Never considering that it's not a great theme or novelesque format alone that makes us want to watch. But how interesting they find the dramatization-- the overall dynamic of the show, which involves many elements-- arc writers, dialog, directors, actors, camera, editors.

There was a third rate show Third Watch. The sense of relationships were well drawn and actors first rate, the conflicts real. But the writers didn't know how to make any of that important (toward the end it collapsed into a mire of preposterous plot lines). The dialog often defaulted to cliches leaving it to these great thesps who, like stupendous outfielders, would catch the ball before it went over the fence and send it back home. Every time. It didn't save the show but it often made it on-again/off-again compelling. Until you found that once again, none of it was very important. Some people "in the know" couldn't watch it at all.

Anyway I loved Deadwood couldn't take JFC. But I appreciate your rare objectivity.

thanks, but believe me, theres alot of stupid reactionary posts by me up here too, trying to stop that though, i mean we're all here to talk about tv shows and movies, right?, your entirely correct, too many juevenile arguments are ruining the whole expierience.

What do you like? What excites you?

I think "Luck" is centered more around individual performances and artistry rather than plot. If you look at the show, and perhaps more importantly, at the characters from a pragmatic sense, you realize that what you're watching is a tour-de-force of thespianism.

reply

This baby is tied for last with John From Cincinatti, also from the fevered Milch brow.

I remember liking Arliss.

reply

I hate True Blood, but like Luck. I never will follow what anyone says. I also liked JFC.

The psychological aspect to this is fascinating......how people confuse the ideas "I don't like this show" and "this show sucks"......there doesn't seem to be any distinction between these ideas. I don't know if its a sense of entitlement, or self-absorption, or just some inflated sense of their own critical abilities.....but always interesting.

reply

Luck and John From Cincinnati are both great shows.

reply

Agree 100%

reply

I have trouble to understand the dialogue too, but I kinda like the show.
I'm not a horse racing fan, I don't do any gamble.
I think I like the feeling, the vibe of what's going on in the show, it's kinda intense, especially the race scenes.

Love the race scene in Ep.04 so much.

reply

It took me about three episodes to really get into it, but the wait was worth it. The characters, and their connections, caused me some difficulty, but I'm looking forward to the fifth episode, which we see here around the same time as in the US.

John From Cincinnati was equally unwatchable. However, the quality of this show's cast makes this show's awfulness a greater crime.

There's some really stupendously stupid comments in this thread. This show is freaking remarkable and I can't get enough of it. Beautifully written, beautifully acted, wonderfully shot. Those daybreak-over-the-racetrack montages are inspiring. If I have to recount the stunning dialogue for you, then you're already a lost cause. There was some concern early on about the mumbling but I frankly don't mind when a great show makes me work. I watched every episode of the The Wire several times a week to get all the nuance of the dialogue. And I watch Luck a couple times a week, but not for deciphering it like The Wire. Just for the sheer joy of the characterizations.

If you want your dialogue simple and spoon-fed, this show is not for you.

Stick to Family Guy.

reply

Insulting others who don't share your opinion doesn't make you smart, just the opposite - and intolerant to boot. Don't take things so personally. It's just a television show.

reply

I'm not sure what you consider so insulting. You yourself suggested the show is not for you, and then admitted you had the same issues with The Wire, which many people consider the best show ever on American television.

From my end, I'm tired of hearing pedestrian complaints about genuine artistry. This show has it all, and I'm frankly stunned when anyone with half a brain criticizes it. Mostly the complaints run from "hard to understand" to "unlikable characters," and I have to wonder if these same people have ever seen a Michael Mann film or listened to a David Milch script. It's like complaining that Mamet films have too much swearing in them.

Try to open your mind, the same way you did with The Wire. This show is fabulous. Honest. Accurate. Real. Articulate in its inarticulation. Trust me, I spend a lot of time at the track.

reply

I completely agree with johndeckbose but we're in the VERY small minority here. Which is perfectly fine.

There's a whole world of television fare out there that's likely more suited to their tastes yet here the naysayers are, proclaiming their extreme dislike for Luck (or The Wire). It's okay if it's not for you, move on.

reply

It's almost as if the haters are unaware there are hundreds and hundreds of other TV shows to watch. Who is forcing them to watch Luck?

reply

Minority here as well - Luck is not for everyone, but I love love love it. I'm pretty savvy about the horse racing industry, and even I have to rethink the dialogue. I find myself watching each episode at least twice--- it's definitely not being spoon-fed, you have to work at it---but I enjoy productions like that. My other favorites have been similar... The Wire, Breaking Bad, The Killing --- those types of shows ( I honestly thought The Wire set the gold standard, and that nothing could touch it, til I got to Season 3 of Breaking Bad, then had to admit that BB is right up there with it...).

Looking forward to next week! To those who hate it, I'd suggest subscribing to hbogo.com (it's free if you get HBO on your cable or satellite) and watching the series from the beginning - easier to understand the cryptic minimalist responses between Ace and Gus the second time around!

I find myself on neither end of the spectrum. Luck isn't exactly my favorite show, but it's not entirely bad either. The mumbling is very frustrating. To those who say they like it, do you also like it when someone mumbles to you in real life or do you really like to "work for it?" Is it that hard to ask that the time the writers spent writing this dialogue audible?

I do enjoy Jerry's story, and really all four of the gamblers for that matter. Ace's story seems to be heading towards something great for the season finale. All in all though, I feel a lot of people don't care for Luck because very little action or humor. The race scenes are fantastic and keep you on the edge of your seat, but outside of that there isn't much.

It's an okay show, just not one that I personally get excited to see next weeks' episode for.

reply

There is tons of humor in the show, but you have to have an appreciation for the characters and dialogue to pick up on it. Marcus/Turo/Gus/Renzo almost always crack me up at least once an episode.
