Is this really better than the first?

I really loved Tropa de Elite and i'm reluctant to think the sequel could be better. According to IMDB ratings, it is. What do you think? Or this is only because a lot of people just saw TDE2 and missed the first one?

reply

I gave the first I think, a 8 or 9 out of 10. I gave this movie a 10 out of 10 and it ranks as one of the greatest and most poignant films I have ever seen.

It stands side-by-side with greats like Godfather 2, Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List.

The original Elite Squad was good but it was a bit more focused on the way the squad worked and their goals. Elite Squad 2 is like an epic political extravaganza and it's over-arching of crime, police enforcement and political corruption is unparalleled to any other movie out there.

I've been searching for another film as gripping as Elite Squad 2 but I haven't been able to find one. It truly lives up to being a 10/10 film and it certainly makes you think differently when it's time to go to the voting booth.

reply

It is crap.

First of all, the "Elite Squad" is not in the movie. They barely show at all. The characters are shallow and don't do anything really, they exist only for the writer to make a political speech.

The "political" message itself is the typical platitude you would expect from a pot smoker who thinks himself a genius, basically it is "the system is corrupt". I bet you never heard that before, right?

The movie felt like it was 5 hours long.

You will be disappointed.

reply

Just because you prefer spending 2 hours watching gunshots, it doesn't mean the first one was better.

Because at least in prison and at least in death, you know, I wouldn't be in *beep* Bruges.

reply

You will be disappointed.

I'm sorry, do you know this person you are talking to?
Surely, you aren't dumb enough to assume this random, anonymous person would automatically have the same opinion as you....

reply

Surely you aren't dumb enough to be unable to understand such a simple post as the OP... right? I mean, considering that it is specifically asking for people's opinions, it is entirely valid for ts-conceicao to write everything he wrote.

reply

Saying "you will be disappointed" is not giving an opinion lol.
Retard.

reply

It is definitely, without doubt, an opinion. In his opinion, the OP will be disappointed.

reply

That doesn't even make sense, mate lol.
It isn't an opinion, it is a very irrational PREDICTION.
If the poster knew the OP personally then fair enough.....But why would you assume that a total stranger would have the same opinion as you?

It is definitely, without a doubt, NOT an opinion. Think it through....

E.G.....In my opinion, your name is mark lol.
Doesn't matter if it is or isn't because in my opinion, it is ;-)

Do you understand the reason for my first post yet?
I doubt it..

reply

Opinion [uh-pin-yuh n] 1. A belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty.

An opinion doesn't have to be based on anything to be an opinion. It is irrelevant if the poster knows the OP or doesn't, or if the OP shares his opinion or doesn't, it is still, by its very definition, an opinion. I can't even believe you think this is debatable; it isn't. And if your opinion is that my name is Mark, then your opinion is factually and demonstrably wrong. Just because you label something an "opinion" that doesn't mean that you can't be wrong. The idea that there are no wrong opinions is, in itself, factually wrong.

reply

Fine, technically it is an opinion....But you do understand that it is a very irrational opinion to form about someone you don't know nor know nothing about??
That is the point of my post.

What a bunch of *beep*

Telling a random person whom you don't know 'you will be disappointed in this movie, because I personally didn't enjoy it' is indeed *beep* retarded.

Particularly when the criticism is so weak. What the *beep* is this dude even talking about. How do people come up with this *beep* "This movie is so cliche like a pot smoker who rants about politics" what the *beep*? That is really some retarded nonsense. At least include something other than subjective *beep* based on your irrelevant personal preferences. Elite Squad 2 is a great film regardless of rather you like it or not. If you can't recognize that, *beep* you.

Why did you delete your post?

reply

First of all, the "Elite Squad" is not in the movie. They barely show at all.

I have the exact same criticism of the first movie.

In the first movie, the Elite Squad barely does anything. In the first hour, they raid a slum for like 5 minutes, which is paused by a 55 minute flashback digression wherein a bunch of university students, normal police officers, and politicians have boring and redundant conversations with each other.

In the second hour, they show how the Elite Squad runs a boot camp for new recruits, followed by another 5 minute slum raid.

So in short, the first film has the Elite Squad actually doing Elite Squad business for about 10 minutes of total screen-time.

Having said that, I do not disagree with your quoted statement. My point is that Elite Squad is a poor and misleading title for both films in this series. Neither film delivers anything like what its title suggests that it will.

reply

So the OP asked if this was worth watching. He got two opinions. One it is one of the greatest films of all time, up there with Schindlers List and the Godfather. The other opinion, it is "crap". Gotta love the IMDB boards lol.

reply

Gotta love it! lol

I try to write stuff... It doesn't work very much...

Its bigger and more ambitious in scale and focuses more on the country itself rather than a few characters. Theres way less action and brutal scenes because it not so much an action flick anymore but a drama/thriller. The plot is more complex and grander, but loses the emotional touch a smaller scale film might have. It brings back some familiar faces too. Its a great sequel that evolves the story and the characters rather rehashing the elements of the first films, so in that sense its better than the first because it takes the plot and characters to another level, but if your looking for alot of gut busting action you will be dissapointed.

reply

It´s definitely better. Less brutal, but much deeper and actually sheds some light on the reality depicted in the first movie. It is based on the rise of the "milicia" (criminal organizations run by crooked police officers) in brazilian slums, and it´s scaringly faithful to the source material and what actually happened; I remember the news and investigations back then, the writers really did their homework well. I don´t know how it impacts non-brazilians, since most of the message is recognizable in the everyday corruption both in the police and the politics in Brazil, but in my opinion it is a masterpiece (regarding storytelling; do not expect pretty scenarios, memorable soundtrack...).

reply

Don't give any attention to ts-conceicao...he enjoys movies like "underworld", "cradle of fear" and other mindless duds that are the media equivalent of drinking bleach and enjoying it.
This movie is definitely a must see, a lot smarter than the first one and it addresses issues that exist in every country in the world. One of the best movies I've seen. I'm planning public screenings of city of god, city of men, and elite squad 1 and 2 (in that order). The more people see these films the better.

reply

I just watched both films over the past 2 nights, both excellent. I gave the pair a 9 each but if I'm being honest 'The Enemy Within' was the better of the two
