I prefer the new gang.

Rudy's my favourite character from all series of the show, and over series 5 so far I've really grown to love the new characters that were introduced last year and actually prefer this new group.

After rewatching it, I think the original gang became dull in series 3 and despite people still complaining that they left I can't imagine what else the writers could have done with them.

Can't say I agree. Abbey is very bland, and she always looks like she's stoned out of her mind. Alex is too unlikeable (courtesy of season 4) Jess always seems to be either mad at Rudy or on the verge of tears... speaking or Rudy, he is the de facto main character of this show now.

And wasn't this show supposed to be about kids with POWERS? The only powers we are constantly seeing is Rudy's split personality and the ''power of the week''.

This incarnation of the gang just really isn't all that impressive.

Umm. No. It's about a bunch of *beep* with crappy superpowers, trying to go about their lives. Casted off, disturbed, and not very likeable personalities. Misfits. The theme of the show was summed up in the very first spoken dialogue on it:

Tony: This is it. It's your chance to do something positive. Give something back. You can help people, you can really make a difference to people's lives. That's what community service is all about. There are people out there who think you're scum. You have an opportunity to show them they're wrong.
Nathan: Yeah, but what if they're right?

Also Finn has used his telekinesis in every episode besides 4x04. And that episode should be called "powers of the week" since so many of them were on display. Body displacement, age switching, future-seer, electricity control, and gaming perception override.

In the end the show has never been able them solving their problems by applying their powers. That's generally what every other superpower show is about. It's about them trying to live their lives despite the weird things that happen to them, and occasionally be better people than anyone assumes they can be. And *beep* up alot.

Jess gets on my very last nerve.
I only really like Rudy but i class him as an older character anyway as he joined when we still had the originals.
Misfits ended after series 3 for me.

Gotta agree with you Smurf, Abbie is pretty bland, Rudy's okay but not all that interesting, Jess is okay (needs better writing IMO), Finn is annoying, Alex is annoying, I think the hardest thing is top Nathan and Simon, maybe the others weren't that awesome individually but they were awesome together, out of all the Misfits, Simon and Nathan were the best.

And don't forget that Greg (Shaun Dooley) is by far the best probation worker ever on the whole series. I mean Shaun (Craig Parkinson) was funny with his "I don't give a *beep*" attitude but Greg is incredibly intense, your laughter dies in your throat with him.

reply

Yeah. I love Greg. Out of all the probation workers he seems like the perfect one for the position as a deterrent to repeated offenses. I'd stay out of trouble because of him because I wouldn't want to be sent to community service again.

Also I think he was the only one that didn't die.

I totally agree with the op, love the current cast and Rudy is my favourite. I wish they would make a few more series with the current cast

I actually love both groups, all the characters, and all five series. It makes me feel like the odd man out when everyone can easily pick one character or series over another. The show was always brilliant to me and I just really want more. I'd even go through more fandom upheaval if they revolve the cast of characters again. As long as Howard is writing it.

Tribute to Rudy, Alex, Finn, Jess, and Abbey. The newest members of the show I love:

I don't prefer them, but I feel they have come into their own with this series for sure.

I can't believe how excellently Overman has turned me around on Alex this year. He might be my favourite character this series, his new power was a stroke of genius and partially redeemed the horrible plot he had from last year.

Abby might be my favourite female character of the entire run. She's so odd and fresh. Her backstory was great and I've immensely enjoyed her bonding with a turtle.

I feel like anything said about Rudy would be redundant at this point. He's become the most valuable asset to the show in my opinion, and Gilgun deserves some serious credit for the range he has displayed over the past 3 years.

Honestly I still think Jess and Finn are kind of weak, not fully realised like the best of the show, but they have their moments too.

Agreed on Alex. Last series if I had to choose a least favorite Misfits character it would have been him. This series he's gold. I think if I had to define what I didn't like about him last series it would be because the mystery around his character kept me from knowing his motivations for the majority of his run. Then it was mostly seeing him in two extreme states: Sensitive disarming flirt and hostile prick. This series has managed to show the balance between those two states. I finally feel like I understand Alex. So I like him.

Stole my post. As much as I loved the chemistry of the original cast the new characters just feel better all around. The original crew got by on a unique premise and strong writing, but individually the characters were kind've one-dimensional.

Overall the writing this season has been surprisingly sharp and the actors have some into their roles nicely (Abbie and Alex especially), but Jess still feels like Alicia-lite to me. She's gonna have to do more than fall in love with every male member of "the gang" and make doe-eyed looks every 15 minutes.

reply

About the original crew being one dimensional I agree. Nathan is probably the best example though funny and vulgar still no real substance. The best example of it was Vegas Baby. As short as it was it was Nathan on his own with no interaction with any of the group and showed how weak his character was when he had no one to bounce off or irritate. Compare that to Rudy-the strongest of the new group. Rudy works brilliantly on his own and with the new group. Even Finn as unpopular as he is among lots of fans works well the way he was written the best would be off his half-sister( shame she wasnt in this series :( ).

reply

These characters have come into their own. Finn clearly has no filter. He talks first then deals with the consequences immediately after but he is somewhat 'the brains' of the group. Small hints but they are there. Finn says stuff that deep down I might think in passing but wouldn't dare say out loud...that's why I find him fun.
I think Jessica is a stronger actress than given credit for and she actually plays a decent straight role...she really plays well off of Rudy and Finn.
Abby is just a mystery. Just can't wait for the big reveal on her.
Then there's Greg. He is just a treat to watch. I'm sorry but he's on par with Rudy in terms of comedy. One disturbing scene that he does through his office window during his gunnery antics aimed at the group in the gym was gold. No words spoken, just pure comedy gold.

reply

You said it. Spot on.

The show and the cast have evolved really well.

I hope they end it strongly, make a great film to compliment it then leave well alone as an example of how to get it just right!
