If a live-action movie should arise...

First of all, that would be EPIC. Secondly, I would demand at least two good solid hours. None of this 98 min. crap. XD Thirdly and lastly, my opinion on cast goes as follows:

Alistair - Alan Tudyk. He is the one and only man I can see playing him; it would be brilliant.
Morrigan - Scarlett Johansson. Not blonde, of course, but she can be an amazing actress if she really puts her effort into it.
Duncan - Liam Nieson. Nothing says, "Awesome father figure/leader," quite like him.
Leliana - Maggie Gyllenhaal. I could just really envision her being a bad butt bard, all alliteration intended.
Zevran - Ben Barnes. His accent in "Chronicles of Narnia" made me quite partial to him for this role.
Oghren - Liev Schreiber. Hilarious drunk half-pint? I think he could pull it off.
Sten - Djimon Hounsou. Race change, I KNOW, but he is brawny with a stern, deep voice.
King Cailan - Ryan Kwanten. His entirety screams for this role.
Wynn - Dame Judi Dench. Not as thin, but she has the right attitude.
Flemeth - Blythe Danner. I think her voice would just be marvelous for it.
Arl Howe - Tim Curry. He's brilliant. I say let him do what he does best.
Teyrn Loghain - Mads Mikkelsen. After much mental debate, his 'silent but deadly' appearance won me over.

As for the lead character... Many deem that a male noble would be a necessity, but I believe that a female elf would prove to be more unique, far more connecting, and able to dish out the mandatory Hollywood 'forbidden romance' with Alistair. I believe the leading lady should be Jessica Biel. We have not seen in a serious role for quite some time, and I miss her wondrous acting.

Well. That is it. Discuss. :)

reply

I disagree with many of the choices...

Alistair- Nicholas Brandon
Morrigan- Claudia Black
Duncan- Jeremy Irons
Leliana- Natalie Portman
Zevran- James Purefoy
Oghren- Karl Urban
Sten- Mickey Rourke
Cailan- Alex O'Loughlin
Wynn- Helen Mirin
Flemeth- Maggie Smith
Howe- Tim Curry (I agree)
Logain- Ralph Finnes

[edit] Although I like playing the game as a female, I think for a movie having Morrigan in a relationship with the Warden would be more compelling. Watching her change from a heartless shrew to someone who cares about another person.

Warden- Alexander Skarsgard

These threads never get old, but this one is especially cringeworthy.

Arent Morrigan and Leiliana supposed to be, I dunno, BEAUTIFUL ?

Yeah Claudia Black is a good voice actress. But for Morrigan she is TOO OLD and she doesnt look like the ingame Morrigan at all, anyway.

Here is a much better version of this thread:

It would please me to no end to see biebs wandering around forever in the fade without a clue what to do... almost mirrors his life.

Frankly, The Warden is actually the least interesting character of them all. The story could well do without him.

Think about it. All he does is walk around running errands for other people. Story-wise, he is the least developed character. (Which makes sense in a game, of course). Every role he could fit in is already taken by the NPCs. You can leave him out, and still have an entertaining story.

Why do people usually want movies? For personal entertainment. Sure, you may already know the storyline, but it is still fun to go and see. If you think that that is pointless, then I guess every movie based on a book or something else is just as so.

Damn...someone thinks a DA movie would have an immense budget.

reply

If that was directed at me... well, it's a dream cast.
Although I really think Mark Strong, Gemma Arterton, and Liam Neeson would perform very well as Loghain, Anora, and Duncan respectively. (Especially Mark Strong, he'd be the perfect Loghain.)

Ohh it was directed at you :) I meant no offence with it though. Just an observation.

I would already love it if they used Jensen Ackles or Mark Strong for those roles! Then nothing else matters anymore (unless they screw up everything, which happens way too often with movies based on games)

Warden - Karl Urban

Alistair - Jensen Ackles

Morrigan - Emily Blunt

Duncan - Mads Mikkelsen

Leliana - Keira Knightley

Zevran - Ben Barnes

Oghren - Costas Mandylor

Sten - Liam Neeson

Wynn - Meryl Streep

Flemeth - Kate Mulgrew

Loghain - Ian McShane

I think I've said that before, but the Warden is actually the most unnecessary part in the whole story.

The only thing he does is forcing decisions that other people could have done without him. Characterwise, he's a nobody. (which of course makes sense in a RPG, but not in a movie). Including him and giving him character would put him on par with the other NPC, but he is unnecessary.

A group of the regular companions without the Warden could carry the movie by themselves, because they are all "classical" archetype characters. Alistair easily fits the reluctant hero of Campbell's "monomyth" without great loss.

However, if we ever have a live-action DA movie, I'm pretty sure it won't be any story that has already been told in the games or other media...

I deleted my post earlier because I made several changes. In my cast, I keep the Warden, though I think it would be very interesting to go the Queen of Ferelden route.

Lady Cousland: Summer Glau
Alistair: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (from Game of Thrones)
Morrigan: Talulah Riley
Zevran: Gaspard Ulliel
Leliana: Christina Ricci
Oghren: Phil Fondacaro (why didn't I think of this guy before!)
Wynne: Helen Mirren
Sten: Richard Brooks (I think he would be tall enough)
Flemeth: Kate Mulgrew herself
Loghain: Mark Strong
Arl Howe: either Tim Curry himself, or Stephen Rea
Teagan: Robert Carlyle
Queen Anora: Gemma Arterton
Duncan: Liam Neeson
King Cailan: Ryan Kawnten (I agree with the OP)
Isabela: either Zoe Saldana or Morena Baccarin

If they wanted to introduce them before Dragon Age 2:

Anders: Harry Lloyd (from Game of Thrones)
Justice: Daniel Craig

No idea who to cast for Sandal or Bodhan...

Jean Reno as Riordan
Orlando Bloom as King Cailan

I'll think of a few more soon.

This game had so many great characters, yeah it would make a great movie, if Eragon(what a sh*t movie) was a fantasy movie why not Dragon Age! I liked all the companions in the game maybe not Zevran.

reply

I agree, a Dragon Age: Origins movie would be amazing if done correctly. Too many of my favourite fantasy book series have been ruined because of careless and/or greedy filmmakers (Eragon, The Golden Compass, Inkheart etc...)

I'm not making a casting list (though I'm sure the already mentioned namnes, Liam Neeson and Jeremy Irons, and Ben Affleck lol, would all do well as Duncan), but I thought it would be interesting to try and narrow the story down and see what needs to be kept and what can go.

Ostagar, the Landsmeet and the final battle need to be in there, of course. The origin story will depend on what kind of main character they'll go for. A human is likely if a romance with Morrigan is to take place (and I believe it should, as the plot twist about their archdemon child would be very interesting). Redcliffe and Andraste's Ashes should be in there, since, as someone already mentioned, it connects with Alistair and his right to the throne. The Brecilian Forest and the Deep Roads could be left out since they're pretty much side plots, but they should show how elves and dwarves come to fight in the final battle. The Circle of Magi, well... if you connect it to the story with Connor in Redcliffe, it could be done. Hence also introducing the concept of the Veil and the danger of magic etc, preparing the audience for a possible sequel (based off DA2, where the Templars and mages play a great part). It is disputable whether DA2 is a good enough game to make a movie of, however.

I agree with what others have said, the Warden isn't a very interesting character in him-/herself, but I believe he (yes, he, for Morrigan's sake) could be made more interesting in a movie than in the game. Alistair could take over the role as main protagonist if necessary, but he's more of a supportive character and needs a hero to tell his witty one-liners to. Morrigan needs to be in there, and they could fit in Zevran quite nicely as he represents some kind of threat from Teyrn Loghain. Wynne and Leliana would be great if possible, especially with Zevran constantly hitting on Wynne, which was hilarious in-game!

Oh, and Sandal is a must. Without Sandal, no Dragon Age. Enchantments!
