So why the 'R' rating?

I read on this forum about the 'sexual content' being partial nudity and the parental advisory is not yet posted so why the 'R' rating?
My parents want to go see it with me but I'd like to have a heads up before I go. It just says 'for language and sexual content' but 'R' rating seems a bit extreme for just partial nudity and a bit of profanity, don't you think?

Yeah, the fireworks scene alone might have been enough, and there are several scenes where Laurent is slightly exposed, and even though it's extremely tame and tasteful, the two together probably affected it. Plus, a lot of times, I think the rating is influenced by the target audience. If this movie held any appeal at all for teenagers, it probably would have gotten by, but it probably wouldn't ever be a hit with a youth audience, so why bother fighting it.

Honestly, there are a lot of movies these days that simply don't need an MPAA rating, and this is one of them. This movie isn't for kids, but more just because they would find it boring than that it would titillate or 'corrupt' them. I think if a movie only plays in art house theaters, chances are, kids won't see it.

And by the by, Gunner Palace, a war documentary, was rated PG-13 with 42 uses of the word '*beep*' and probably got away with it, because of the subject matter and realism. According to Wikipedia, it's easier for a film to get by with '*beep*'s if they're used in a non-sexual fashion, which is sort of typifies the American stigmatization of sex, while violence is sometimes overlooked.

The rating system only allows so many uses of the work *beep* so the went over that at the fireworks
