Did people rate this badly because...

they were expecting a full blown Will Ferrell comedy? Or because it was just not that good? I'm curious 'cause I'd like to watch it, but I don't want to waste my time. I personally like movies like this, so wether Will Ferrell knocks me on my ass laughing or not doesn't really matter. I'd just like to know if it's worth the watch. Thanks for feedback!

Will gets an 8 the writers get a 5 = 6.5 IMDB rating. Women like Samantha simply don't exist and there were times in the movie I predicted correctly the next line. Laura Dern is in it for about 5 minutes and their encounter is rather unbelievable also. Overall interesting and funny idea just not very well carried out by the writers including the ending.

6.5 stars is quite accurate

The movie steps outside the boundaries of reality in an attempt to give us a movie about reality which makes it a hard sell.

Very well said, my friend. Exactly what I thought.

Yes, it's a sweet film if unremarkable. I imagine alot of Ferrell comedy fans wouldn't like it because the film is essentially about alcoholism.
The Carver story concept is excellent but I think it's a decent script adaptation making the most of the picket fence suburbs + Ferrell has a good 'straight' future if surrounded by an ensemble as good as this one.

I rated this a 4 out of 10 mainly because of the bland acting by Ferrell and the scenes that did not go anywhere or having any real meaning to the film. What was the purpose of Laura Dern's character? We already knew Will's character is a sweet drunk so she just confirmed that he was a sweet drunk from high school days. The pregnant neighbor relationship would have been much greater if the dialog between the two was not so boring and dragged out. Will Ferrell's character had the same stone face the entire movie; no emotion at any point, even when he was drunk. I would've enjoyed seeing more anger from him when he came home to find himself locked out and all his possessions on the lawn, and more sadness from him at the end when he realized that his marriage was really over, the yard sale was over, and he'd have to move out and move on with his life.

I did love the Arcadia, Scottsdale, and Phoenix locations since I live near there, and also loved the red Fiat X1/9 shown in one of the outtakes when he hires a hooker to come by just to 'talk to' on the front lawn. I had a car like this after high school and have great memories of it.

So, overall, a very lackluster performance by Farrell, a bunch of scenes that had no explanation as to their purpose, but many great locations.

I thought exactly the same thing about Will Farrell while watching this movie.

I don't understand why so many people here are saying this was his best performance etc. I mean, I've never seen him in any other movies before (other than Stranger Than Fiction which I didn't like), but if THIS is his best performance yet, then I don't know how to imagine what his other movies are like.

I actually dont like Will's typical fart joke comedies but I liked his roles in Stranger Than Fiction and The Other Guy.

This was a good film. But the ending was a letdown and some of the characters went nowhere despite the promise they showed.

I think most moviegoers expected a comedy because some of the tv spots treated it like a comedy. See it anyway. You won't be wasting your time because Will Ferrell did a great job. Some things should have been changed, but overall I liked this film.
