Did people rate this badly because...

they were expecting a full blown Will Ferrell comedy? Or because it was just not that good? I'm curious 'cause I'd like to watch it, but I don't want to waste my time. I personally like movies like this, so wether Will Ferrell knocks me on my ass laughing or not doesn't really matter. I'd just like to know if it's worth the watch. Thanks for feedback!

reply

Definitely worth the watch. I loved this film. Ferrell was marvelous!

Its a good movie. He plays a more dramatic role and he does a very good job. I just rented it from Redbox. Check it out!

reply

Ferrell proved in this film that he has good dramatic acting skills.

Frankly, I think the real reason this doesn't get rated higher is because in this society, we don't like stories that make us face our own shortcomings, and which don't offer fairy tale endings.

reply

I thought the ending was a let down. I did like Will Ferrell in a more serious role.

Uh, this was not even a half comedy.

reply

I knew it was not a comedy going in. The least bit of research would tell you this.

reply

I gave it a 6 because the last 20 minutes were so saccharine and treacly that this movie gave me 5 cavities.

reply

Saccharin can't give you cavities! Bacteria need real sugar to grow in.

reply

Saccharine is a word. Saccharin is a trademark. Saccharine means "sugary". Saccharin is a sugar substitute.

reply

I said I liked him in a more serious role. The ending I didn't like. I think you responded to the wrong person.

reply

It's never wrong to end a film with the Band singing "I Shall Be Released."

I personally chose to watch this because it said it was a drama comedy, and I guessed it would be along the lines of Stranger Than Fiction, and so I watched it on netflix right then. But it was not laugh out loud funny, and I also didn't care for the ending, plus my husband was complaining the whole time that this movie sucked, and that made it also hard to enjoy it. I gave it a 6/10, because while it wasn't bad, I wouldn't eagerly watch it again. I think a drama should make you feel emotional while watching it, and it just made me a little annoyed since I didn't get why most of the characters did anything they did. So I turned on an episode of "I shouldn't have survived" and I cried, and then I turned on Shin Chan and I laughed. Those shows know how to deliver, unlike this dry movie.

gladly it was not one of his comedies. I personally enjoy more Ferrel as a drama actor than any of his "comedies". Stranger than fiction has to be his most outstanding role by far.

Shut up and LIVE!

reply

I agree 100%. Stranger than Fiction was not just his most outstanding role, but deserved a lot more credit than it got.

Elf was also a great role for him. I can't see anyone else pulling it off.

i voted it low because i found it really boring. it seemed ridiculous that his wife could lock him out, cut his phone off and stop his bank account. and yet he'd be in the wrong if he broke in? to his own house? that he paid for with his money?

this was a real stupid film. what about the guy driving off with his company car, when it had his stuff in it, and saying that its now the property of the company? can he really do that?

i think it was all a bit silly and far fetched and pointless. and really really boring. i was glad when it ended, i won't be watching this movie again.

Not a comedy but some moments that make you chuckle. It's a quiet meditation on one man coming to turns with the disintegration of his life. The quirkiness of him living on his front lawn could have been explored further - it could have gone more into a social comment on capitalism and private property ownership. Will Ferrell does the 'everyman' very well, which he showed us in Stranger Than Fiction. I loved this movie.

reply

It's got a 6.5 rating so it's not like "people rated this badly" as you put it.

Personally, after watching it I hesitated between giving it a 6 or a 7, so right around the imdb average. It's a good movie and I enjoyed it but it wasn't amazing IMO.

reply

I watched this movie knowing fully well that it wouldn't be a typical Will Ferrell comedy, even looking forward to it. And my gripe wasn't with his acting at all, I simply think the movie sucked.
