He found what's come to be known in Oregon folklore as The Lost Blue Bucket Mine. He found a creek/river bed full of gold nuggets, and the place was marked as it was by Paul Dano in the film, but it's never been found since.

I understand they had to move on; however, had I been there I would have suggested taking maybe just an hour or two to gather some nuggets, since the boy indicated they were plentiful and lying around in plain sight.
