I have opinions of my own, but I don't always agree with them - George Bush

I thought it was going to be interesting, but it was so boring. All the characters acted like they had a secret agenda aside from the group, like they were all hiding something. I couldn't tell what they were saying half the time because they were mumbling. Some movies that barely have dialogue are ok, but this one just wasn't.

CLEAR EYES. FULL HEARTS. CAN'T LOSE!!!

reply

I agree, its esentially pretentious bullcrap.

reply

no, it's essentially a museum display come to life, an historical reenactment put to film. that's why there is no music soundtrack or fancy editing. there is nothing pretentious about this movie. that is why there is not beginning to the film, nor an end to it. it's just a slice, a chapter, of this epic trek across the continent. and in the end you are left to ask yourself what decision you would have made if in their shoes.

reply

There is a music soundtrack. It's hard to catch, because it is just as pretentious as the movie.

..... What film came out in 1999 that was more boring? Oddly specific timeframe, just curious.

reply

Of course it was boring. Crossing the country on foot at that time was ridiculously boring. 10 miles a day? The paranoia, the temperature changes, the food/water supply, the dependence on nature and each other, the darkness, the risks, the physical and mental toll it takes on each person, the simple things that could go wrong that could literally prevent them from making it......that is what the film was about.

Did you feel like you got a pretty good idea of what the pioneers had to go through to get to the West Coast? If you did, then the film did its job.

reply

Agreed. THe early travelers had a rough time getting to the west. This film portrays that well. And it was nice not seeing a lot of sex and nudity and gore and drugs and all that crap that most US movies absolutely must put in to sell their movie.

She and Kelly Reichardt are good friends. It's not like she needs to boost her acting credentials. I'd say 3 Oscar nods is sufficient. That she ventures into a wide range of movie roles is a credit to her as a generous actor.

I'd say something clever like "It's not the movies that are boring, it's the people who watch them," but Reichardt's pacing in everything she directs is glacially slow, yet purposeful and meaningful to the whole if you understand what she's up to.

Conversely, as I just mentioned in a previous post, I was extremely bored with The Dark Knight. The endless jump cuts and the monotony of overbearing sound effects had me squirming in my seat and checking my watch. Talk about overwrought...

Is this because you have no knowledge of film before 1999, or because you know all films made prior to then to be boring? It's one or the other, surely.

reply

Astute observation.
