The Indian

Does anyone know what language he was speaking and perhaps what he was saying? Was he on a vision quest or some other ritual that meant he was on his own?

reply

It would be interesting to know what he was saying (after having seen the movie, of course). Maybe he's explaining exactly where they're going and if he's leading to water or not.

While I do not know the words he spoke, he never struck me as lost or possessing ill intentions. When Williams brings him water and repairs his moccasin he is drawing a picture on the rock wall. It could have been a message or story relating to his journey. Later we see other symbols and markings on similar surfaces. This reveals that others have come this way, that this is a route known to his people.

Like everyone here, I couldn't make out a single word he was saying. But his words the first night of his captivity hardly sounded defiant or sinister - more like, "why are you doing this to me, God?"

reply

Yeah, it sounded to me like he was praying.
