I Think I Know Why This Film Got A 5/10

Seems like this movie requires more inference from the audience -- from the dialogue, to all the little subtleties sprinkled throughout the film. The meaning/messages are pretty indirect.

Everything wasn't overly simplified & spelled out for the viewer - how the mindless general public likes their films. It wasn't all wrapped up in a neat little package with a bow.

I keep seeing posts about how the plot/dialogue didn't make any sense & the film was "boring." I think this film is more for those who have an active mind -- not the lazy-minded majority of people, just looking for a good cinematic spectacle.

I can't help but think that we live in a lazy society of people obsessed with simplicity and neatly-packaged crap -- I thought this was a quality film that just requires a little effort from the viewer, and doesn't fit in with all the other junk food cinema, pumped out weekend after weekend.

Personally, I liked the "boring" day-in-the-life format of the film & the thought-provoking conversations that it centered around. That's just me -- I like films that require (& generate) thought.

That's why I think it got such a bad score. What about you?

reply

I agree fully honestly.
I get mild enjoyment knowing its now on Netflix and imagine teenies who fawn over RP getting bored and then making its score lower

reply

Those teenies gave this film highest score.
Females under 18 - 6,2

Nice post. I think you hit the nail on the head. Keep in mind that Crash was pretty widely reviled by audiences and many critics back in '96/'97 as well.

reply

I agree, but I think the problem is simpler: It's too much dialog vs specific actions. A few movies have that balance. People is not used to it. Then... add an open ending and people will be really pissed.
I understand the rating. I don't think the movie deserves it, but I don't think about this as one of Cronenberg's best.

reply

The movie is all talk and no action. There's no one to root for, because they are all cold, unemotional sociopaths. It's hard to identify with someone. Most people need a 'hero' in a movie, someone they can root for. I also think it's too slow for most younger audiences, and there are probably a couple of hundred negative votes in there too from disgruntled Twilight lovers.

The only reason this movie got a 5/10 is because delusional people thinking this was anything better than a 3/10 at best bumped the rating up by giving it a much hgher score than it deserved. It really was horrible.

reply

Yet you're on the message board for the horrible film.

reply

Oh, so now people who think a movie is horrible can't go to a message board to read others thought about it, and put their own opinion in? I think you just wrote the dumbest thing that I have read all week, and that is saying a ton.

Don't put words in my mouth
He can say whatever he wants. What am I not allowed to make a snarky comment? See what I mean?

reply

You can both say whatever you want, however, you are the one that took everything out of context. See how that works? He was talking about how bad the movie was, you brought up the fact he was posting on a movie he didn't like. What you said was completely irrelevant.

reply

Or, it's a completely horrible film but because it's got Croenenbergs name attached too it, pretentious people will claim it's better than it is because of who made it. It doesn't have anything about it thought provoking, every single moment was bland and trying to be smarter than it was. It had no deeper meaning, Croenenberg just stopped trying.

Or,
maybe someone's trying to piss all over the cake he couldn't taste right? :)

You said it all, it didn't provoke any thinking. Mind you, speak for yourself, Einstein.

reply

Piss on this cake would've at least been a taste, but if the movie is the cake, it's the most bland flavorless cake in history. I got more provoking thoughts out of Sharknado 2 than Cosmopolis

reply

Thought this movie was very dull, and I'm not a person who likes spoonfed plots and everything explained. There were some interesting themes and visuals but the whole thing just seemed pointless. One of the worst from cronenberg in my opinion.
