Why a straight up comedy?

It's not like the original series wasn't in some ways self aware of the fact that it's cheesy hammy California set melodrama was just an excuse to watch conventially beautiful people in tight and exposed swimwear run slowly across the beach while the sunset rays gaze thier presence, and that fact gave it its charm. Doing Baywatch in this style just feels forced on another type of level. What ever happen to tounge in cheek action pulp? Do modern audiences really need to be slapped with penis joke after fart gag after pop culture reference in order to know thier watching something not meant to be taken all that seriously?

They're obviously following in the footsteps of the 21 Jump Street formula. Doubt Baywatch will be as self aware and clever as those films though.

Yep, seems like they're going the 21 Jump Street style (sequel films, sort of, but in Baywatch's case it's a complete reboot). Which is the right way to go, as the TV show should be made fun of some more. Eye candy and some laughs -- just give me that.

Don't we have enough of these?

And no, the original Baywatch was not self aware in any way. This is Hasselhoff we're talking about. He was not a man of self-awareness at the time.

Op is absolutely right

He's right, but I can also see how even the people behind this movie didn't think it could be anything more than something to laugh at. It's hard to imagine anyone having much faith in a film about Baywatch but maybe if they framed it in a 21 Jump Street kinda way, maybe they would get people in. Obviously it didn't work.

I'm trying to go for an engaging, funny youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance. A review of the movie here-https://youtu.be/jde9k0WabJA
