That crazy amount of hate he got was just vile. And media willingly participated in it and instigated. I actually wonder why all those journalists were not held accountable at least now like with Britney when media were finally shamed for treating her like that during her youth.

There was no Internet and social media back then like its now. Every family didnt have computer even if Internet existed. All news people got from newspapers and tv. And those constantly were fueling that incident that should have been over few weeks after World Cup elimination. Not to mention they lost on penalties and would have lose anyway even with him in it. England never wins major tournaments to this day, 25 years later. Yet they always enter it every 2 years fully thinking "This is the year we totally got it". Then get eliminated somewhere in quoter-finals.

Yet media and all those "sport experts" in their interviews kept instigated hate towards one 23 years old young player. He held it spectacular well and never lashed out. And in the end became so famous for his success that many people even forgot that incident.

But still you can see he had it really hard mentally. And club didnt protect him at all. What they had to do was to release statements and interview in person to shame media and tell people to stop. That its gone too far and this bulling needs to be stopped. It was going for months.

People would cool off by the time he would get back to England. And he would not have to face all that crazy hate. Not only him but his family and Victoria. They would all be left alone when David would play in another country. And people would move on in few weeks when the object of their hate is not in their faces to lash out at.
