The claim this film makes about being based on a true story is pretty dubious.
It's interesting though to see how gullible certain movie goers are

It's not like he killed the SAS guy on the base...he killed him on exercise in the Brecon Beacons, which is a mountainous National Park in South Wales which the SAS use in part of their selection process.

The plot line to this story is almost too stupid to be true! What execs
give the go ahead for these garbage movies to be made? At least give us
a chance to think that the story could be even remotely
believable.Watching this crap is why you don't let your wife (who likes
clive owen) into your netflix account.Deniro,please stop tarnishing
your magnificent legacy with these terrible movies.

To be fair in 1980 when the film is set, until the Iranian Embassy Siege in May of that year, most civilians didn't really know who the SAS were, and not many people are stupid enough to try sneaking onto a military base as it would most likely involve going to prison for quite a long time (at a guess).
