'twist'

is annoying. does he have to be a 'wigger'? Can't he just sing and dance like the other 3? His little raps and hip hop moves are old. That doesn't need to be on a kids show.

reply

He is ridiculous. I cannot stand his character. They could get rid of him and the show would be fine. He acts so stupid. Ugh.

My two year old likes it, so I'm stuck with watching his moronic notions.

reply

He is really over the top annoying.

Don't knock Twist. You have to hand it to him, the actor keeps up a very high energy level in every show. They all do really. Twist especially hams up the antics, but that is they want. My kid loves him, I can tell he's her favorite. It's not what adults like.

reply

Twist is my favorite of all the characters :)

Lol and people wonder why our country is slipping further and further behind other countries in almost everything..well everything except exporting jobs, but that's another convo for another time lol. Acting like a wigger? That term itself is rather idiotic and even by it's own moronic definition doesn't fit this character. I'm black and I just so happen to grow up in a poor area of the city I'm from(or a "ghetto" or "hood" as some would call it) and I also happen to grow up around some white people born and raised in the same area. Guess what? They "acted" just like the black people in the same area simply because...it's not an act, it's the environment in which they were raised.

The term "wigger" however, means someone from a middle to upper class area acting like someone from a "ghetto" or "hood" area except has a much more racist connotation to it. Like I said above, that doesn't apply to twist. Even when he's rapping, he barely uses any "ebonics" and the little that he does use, is and has been for a long time now, used by people from all walks of life(he uses little to none during his speaking parts). He articulates well while rapping and during his speaking parts. Unless you mean the fact that he's rapping/djing/beatboxing in the first place. If so, you're just a narrow minded bafoon.

The whole rat a tat tat argument was idiotic to even start by the person that originally brought it up. He was obviously looking for another reason to hate this guy. There is no way he was making a gun sign with his hand and just like someone before me said, his hands were the same way throughout the whole rap. Not to mention he was speaking about DRUM sounds...not shooting at dora or cayou to eliminate the competition lol.

Lastly, he's annoying because he's over the top? Are you serious? LOL That's like watching law and order and saying "man I really hate detective benson, she acts like a real detective". THAT'S THE POINT my feeble minded fellows. Also, if you have just a tad bit of analytical skills you would see that each character represents different sides of a child. Twist is the goofy/silly side of a kid. He also happens to represent, more than the other characters anyway...IMAGINATION. Shout represents the loud and hyper side of a child, while kiki tends to represent that wonderfully happy and carefree attitude children can have. Marina represents the slightly more serious side of children along with creativity. These characters may not follow these descriptions STRICTLY in EACH show, but in general that's what they represent.

Personally, I wouldn't even know about the show had I not adopted a childhood friend's child because she was unfit. However, since my daughter loved the show I decided to sit and watch it with her to see what it was all about. I'm a man that wants to truly see and analyze the things my child enjoys. The undertones and all and from what I see.....The Fresh Beat Band is a great show for children. I also enjoy their music as simple as the lyrics may be. I understand it's for children, but that doesn't mean the quality of the singing or dancing skills have to be sub par like other shows. They have exceptional singers and choreography. I personally like kiki the best, she's a powerhouse and that's what I enjoy. When she hits that "STOOOOOP" note on the great day song at the end of each episode, I still get a few goosebumps lol. I'd love to work with her musically.

reply

Nothing personal, but I'm not sure what show you are watching, but The Fresh Beat Band does not have exceptional singers and dancers. Yvette (Kiki) is clearly the top talent in the group as she is actually trained in music, dance and instruments. Thomas Hobson (Shout) has a good voice, but it's obvious he's not playing keyboards all of the time and Jon Beavers (Twist) is great at comic relief, but his rapping is terrible. Though I don't find it nearly as annoying as I did originally. The weakest link has been replaced and that was Shayna Rose (Marina). Her voice is sub par, her acting is terrible (fired from a soap opera and hasn't improved since!), she regularly loses her place and balance while dancing and she can't even fake the drumming well. In case you've missed it, there have been many, MANY times when she should have been drumming and the sticks didn't even touch the ONE drum she bangs on most of the time let alone playing the other drums and cymbal in time with the music. It can't all be bad editing. Sadly, I imagine the FBB will be the highlight of her career and hopefully Tara Perry? will make a good new Marina. (Haven't seen any episodes with her in it yet).

In truth, I only allow my daughter to watch it because she is now deciding what instrument she wants to play and they do teach musical terms and instrument functions on the show. When it first came out she had ZERO interest in it and I've made it very clear to her that only Kiki is a real musician and she should understand the rest are just pretending. Be honest with your kids about shows like this, it's the best thing you can do for them. Sure it's "just a kid show", but kids aren't stupid unless YOU allow them to be dumbed down. Put a dumb show in front of them and they'll "learn" accordingly. Tell them that Kiki really is playing the violin and Marina is pretending will serve them much better than hyping up a crap show.

And to the parents saying they have to watch because their kids like it, no you don't. You're the parent, you have control. My kid wants to watch several shows and they are absolute NO's. Somehow her life goes on without Barney and Spongebob in it.

reply

You obviously missed 2 very important parts of my post. I don't blame you for missing one, but the other is CLEARLY stated. I said they have exceptional singers which they do. "Kiki" and "Shout" are great singers and just because marina isn't doesn't mean my point is negated lol. I said they have exceptional choreography, not dancers lol. The choreography is good, just because someone can't execute it well doesn't negate my point either. What I didn't say(because I figured I wouldn't need to) is that all of these comments are in a certain context..KIDS SHOWS.

So let me say it now, for a kid's show and compared to other kid shows with music and dancing as a main part of what the show is all about, Fresh Beat Band soars above them all.

Also, most of your argument against mine was about a single person on the show(a bad actress) and not about the show as a whole. Following that logic I can make almost anything in any part of the world "crap". Oh and about the whole "tell them how some things are fake and some are real rather than hyping up a crap show" comment..I just laugh at you lol. First, my child is just about to turn age 2, I'll explain those things when they actually become important for her to know. Trying to drill into a 2 year old's head how one thing is fake and another thing isn't when dealing with a child's show is just asinine. Oh and one more rebuttal, twist rap is terrible? I won't sit here and lie and say I enjoy it cause I don't. Yet, it's not there for ME to enjoy, it's there for CHILDREN. I also happen to dislike most mainstream rap and stick to underground as well, but what I will say is this. He can't really write or have anything written for him much more complex than what they do now. His tone while rapping is fine to me as well as his delivery so I don't see why it's so "terrible". Hell, his little kid raps are delivered better than some mainstream rappers lol.

My final comment is to you personally. You seem to really dislike this show, by your comment about the pretending thing, I'm assuming you think the show is crap. Why would you let your child watch a show that you feel is mostly crap just to learn a FEW terms of music? lol There are MUCH better options for your child, even if it is just to decide which instrument to play. Also, since the show is such "crap" and hardly any of them actually play the instruments they claim to play(a point we all know you drill into her head) and as you pointed out, sometimes can't even act like they are playing it well. Wouldn't that make her choice a bit biased toward the person or people actually playing the instrument they claim to play? Lol You're a funny person :)

reply

Sorry you can't read.

reply

Lol I'll take that comment as a "Yeah you're right". Only people that can't come up with a decent rebuttal stoop to simple insults. You couldn't even insult and give reasons behind the insult. I hope you're teaching your child better than that. Then again, what can I expect from a person with the login name "allknowingbroad" lol.

reply

No, I have better things to do and you are incorrect. You'll reply back. Good on you.

I think Twist is the funniest of the four. (Kiki = strongest singer, Marina = prettiest smile, Shout = most athletic dancer.)

I have zero problem with Twist's performances, even if its not something I'd look for my own tastes in music. On the merits, does he not show a sense of rhythm? enunciate the syllables in time and with tempo? accompanied by expressive body and hand movements, with timing? do the lyrics make sense and match the song it's featured in? Doesn't he look like he's having fun doing it, inviting the audience to have fun with him? I say yes to all, and my 4-yr-old who is a fan of the show seems to agree.

I like to think that our culture has gotten past the issue of "white men shouldn't rap" or "only blacks can rap", and the term "wiggers" which is offensive regardless of one's race.

Music transcends race. Of the elements of music, be it harmony, melody, rhythm, tempo, timbre, etc. color is not among them. Same goes for rap and hip hop. Genuine fans of the genre accept this. Fans of any music should either accept this, or else refrain from judging. Judge a rap performance on its merits, or at least on pure taste. I see no reason race should be a factor.

Just a side note, once upon a time I erroneously thought J.Geils Band's ("Centerfold" from the 80s) vocalist was black. Same goes for Freddie Mercury when I first heard the Queen song "Another One Bites a Dust". Similarly I was recently surprised to learn that the hit single "Fly Like a G6" is performed by a group comprised of Asian-descent musicians. And Enimem, what race is he? When I listen to him, I think of his race as "who f. cares"-American.

If you don't like Twist as a performer because his moves are too old or whatever, that's fine. At least that reason is not about his race.

"That doesn't make much sense to me. But then again, you are quite small. Perhaps you're right."

I just hope that he's a truly fantastic actor and isn't really that dumb. My 4 yr old couldn't remember his name and wanted to ask a question, so he said "You know that dumb guy on Fresh Beats?" While obviously they are all going to act a bit goofy, and overact their roles in an adult's eyes, he's just a LITTLE too convincing as a moron.
