Movies similar to this one ?

Can anybody recommend more movies similar to this one ?

spiritual ones; or where the chemistry between the main characters is right (in the end at least) ?

Into The Wild
The Straight Story

Saw Into The Wild already, but didn't like it that much.
The Straight Story has a rating of 8, I'll check this one out.

Thanks ;)

So have you seen The Straight Story yet?...

I enjoyed it. It was slow-moving but it felt real..as in not 'acted'. I loved the way he connected to people on the way.

I loved Richard Farnsworth in Anne of Green Gables. He was such a sweet man. I was shocked by his death.

Sorry for the late response, I missed the Imdb notification until today.

I haven't watched it yet, but it's still on the list.

I found "The Man from Earth". it's not like "The Way", but I enjoyed it very much, too.

reply

This movie immediately reminded me of the straight story. I think the Straight Story packs more of an emotional wallop, mainly because of the incredible performance of Richard Farnsworth, but they are both really good movies.

How is "Into The Wild" like "The Way" ? I'd like to read that.

I agree with the earlier poster who recommended "Le Grand Voyage" (2004), in which a man exasperatingly drives his elderly traditional father across Europe in a pilgrimage to Mecca. The son doesn't really want to go but it's a fascinating trip.

Also, "Bonneville" (2006) with Jessica Lange, is similar -- road trip, distributing a loved one's ashes.

reply

"Le Grand Voyage" was really enjoyable. Explored deeply the relationship between father and son, and dealt with healing between them. Inspirational.

Wristcutters, in it's own strange way.

just want to help... this is a common error... "in *its* own strange way"...

it's=it is /it has (it's been done)

Misused homophones are like someone's tag sticking out of the back of someone's shirt to me... gotta correct them!

You're not helping anyone but yourself, by scratching YOUR itch. They didn't ask/need your help. And your motive, as you stated wasn't to help, but to ease your own problem.

Can't think of a more-polite way to say... Get A Life.

reply

They didn't ask for help partly because they didn't know it needed to be corrected. If someone doesn't point out the difference to them, they'll never know.

Really liked that movie. If you like it, check out 'Twin Falls Idaho' - around the same time and a very nice movie imho.

Le Grand Voyage.

Similar to this as the plot revolves a father and son on a pilgrimage and reaches a sort of spiritual enlightenment, except it's the father who wants to take the journey and the son who goes due to the father instead of the other way around in this film, they're in a car and both are alive.

I recommend it as a movie similar to this and a great movie in its own rights.

I totally agree with this recommendation. I was deeply moved by "Le Grand Voyage". Another one specifically about El Camino is this one: "Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago" about 6 different pilgrims and their stories of what brought them on the pilgrimage.

"One Week"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1104806/
Chronicles the motorcycle trip of Ben Tyler as he rides from Toronto to Tofino, British Columbia. Ben stops at landmarks that are both iconic and idiosyncratic on his quest to find meaning in his life.

"Heartlands"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0295303/
Gentle Colin 'Col' Lawes travels by motor scoter to the seaside town of Blackpool hoping to win back the woman he loves. The adventurous journey feels like the start of a more playful life.

"The Big Year"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1053810/
Two bird enthusiasts try to defeat the cocky, cutthroat world record holder in a year-long bird-spotting competition.

However, I didn't really see any of these movies as 'spiritual' ones, but rather as a collection of good characters interacting in and across some pretty interesting settings.

At any rate, I wish I could get EE's e-mail or something... to thank him for making such a nice little film and giving us a much needed break from so much over-budgeted tripe out there.

Otterprods, to keep those aquatic Mustelidae in line.

If you don't mind a real oldie, I highly recommend "A Canterbury Tale" (1944).

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036695/

It is set in England during WWII and follows a disparate group of travellers as they make their way to Canterbury (and its magnificent cathedral) for different reasons.

The plot as outlined on IMDB sounds a bit preposterous but if you stick with it, it's well worth it.

And another one I have watched many times is "Mr Harvey Lights A Candle" (2005). I think it was a BBC tele-movie but it can be found and downloaded from some of the torrent services. It stars the wonderful Timothy Spall and contains some beautiful cinematography.

There is a movie called "Mindwalk" where a physicist, a poet and a politician meet and talk for a while day on the island of Mont St. Michel in France. It is much like this in the form of people meeting and making connections and talking. I'm not sure I can think of another movie that is closer to this movie than "Mindwalk".
