Stephen King Short Story

This is obviously a ripoff of Stephen King's short "The Long Walk" where you have to walk until the last one's standing.

reply

I agree. By the way, "The Long Walk" isn't a short story, it's a full novel written under Stephen King's pen name Richard Bachman.

It's a novella, a short story. Same horse, different jockey. Either way, it's a book. It was part of the Bachman collection along with Running Man and something else I can't remember...

reply

Yes - The Long Walk, Rage, Running Man and Roadwork were all in the Bachman Books. And I agree, this does seem mighty similar to the premise of The Long Walk.

It is not a novella. Novellas don't come in at 384 pages. That description is for a short novel or a short story. This was published as a paperback in 1979, and reprinted with the other Bachman books in 1985, which is when I bought it.

reply

For King, 384 pages is a novella. ?
I thought this was a short of his as well, in a collection, but after a while, his stories all begin to meld into this giant town filled with killer corn clown babies.

reply

Agreed! It's a novel, and not a short-story or novella (otherwise it shouldn't have taken me long to read it *s*)! Loved this one, and even though it's more than 15 years ago, some parts of this novel never quit my thoughts. Impressive!
And yes, this plot immediately reminded me of THE LONG WALK.

If you're going to analyze someone's speech, at least get it right. It's actually NOT a novel, it's a novella.

reply

It is a novel not a novella or short story or any other thing you want to call it. If you don't believe it go to www.stephenking.com and look it up. He has a category listing his novellas, and a category listing his short stories. It is found in neither, you can find it under "Bachman novels" as it was a novel written as Richard Bachman. If anyone is an authority on what type of book it is, Stephen King would be that authority.

Agree.

As soon as I read the plot for this that's exactly what came to mind. Oh well, hope the film is good.

As soon as I read the synopsis, I saw the connection immediately. I have been waiting for a film adaptation of that novella. I hope I will not be disappointed with this "imitation" story.

reply

First thing I thought too when I read the synopsis. getting ready to watch it now. Will be interesting to see if it's a rip off or stands on it's own.

I've been wanting to see a movie of The Long Walk since I read it so many years ago (have the original bachmans) I think now with the success of Hunger Games it could do well. Of course no doubt the young ones who don't know better will swear it's a rip off of HG :)

reply

I just assumed it was another King adaptation, not a "rip off". But I don't know what was meant by that, necessarily. So many King stories have been made into movies with varying success. Even if they change every other detail of the story, the synopsis alone is enough he could sue if they don't credit him. So I'll be very interested in seeing if they paid him anything for the rights.

I keep waiting for someone to try "Gerald's Game". I never thought it could be done, but now I'm not sure.

reply

Aside from a similar concept of people walking and getting killed if they stop, it bears no resemblance to "The Long Walk." At no point while watching this did I think any such thing. The premises of these stories are entirely different.

reply

LOL. Yeah.

Aside from that little detail of it being about people walking and getting killed if they stop.

Because that's such a prevalent story.

reply

You're just gonna love The Hunger Games.....
The last man standing concept is nothing new to fiction, King didn't invent every type of plot.
