SPOILER Catching up with the family

The family got away once and returned to pick up Agnes' toy. Then they got away again and if the car hadn't broken down, the couple would have let them get away again. But the movie makes it look as though the couple had it all planned. Doesn't make sense that the couple would be so negligent. And why not kill the family first night? Not to mention them leaving the barn open with all the evidence and Abel dead in the pool. It's called "lazy writing."
Also, the movie contradicts itself because the wife does speak up and eventually so does the husband. They weren't that submissive.
