Yes, he actually said: "I was basically dead."

Please join my campaign to eliminate the tedious use of the word 'basically.'

Here is the reasoning:

The word "basically" is an overused verbal tic which demeans and condescends to the listener. It is at the same time a way for the speaker to inflate his own self esteem by flogging and repeating words that appear to emphasize personal knowledge.

It is a fault which has become, I fear, some sort of custom or accepted
colloquialism.

You start with "attention writers" and THAT was your problem with this movie??? The word "basically"?

Come to think of it: Now this movie has even two laughs :)

So, when someone describes a complicated process to which someone else responds, "I don't understand.." then the original speaker is forbidden to present a less complex way of understanding it by saying "Well, basically, blah blah blah.." ???????????

Hmm, you know, the word obviously kinda pisses me off, so why don't we throw that one out there? I mean basically, it's like everyone uses it in every damned sentence, and literally runs it into the ground. Maybe I'm complaining a bit too much, but whatever.

To best way to avoid the overuse of "basically" is to occasionally replace it with "essentially". Or "really just". Or, my personal favorite: "literally".

Basically, typically, literally, naturally, essentially, fundamentally, whatever, what the heck... let's abolish all of these words. Come to think of it, let's abolish English entirely.
