How to rank the seemingly endless pile of recent box office bombs

I'm interested in finding out which of these films that tanked at the box-office are actually considered to be pretty good and underrated. I'm aware of the IMDB and RT rankings, but I'd still like to hear more opinions. Rank these recent Hollywood fails in order of worst(1) to best(10)- and please only rank films that you've actually seen.

-1. I Frankenstein
-2. Pompeii
-3. After earth
-4. The Lone ranger
-5. John Carter
-6. Green lantern
-7. The legend of Hercules
-8. Battleship
-9. 47 ronin
-10. Cloud Atlas
-11. R.I.P.D.
-12. White House Down
-13. Enders game
-14. Oldboy
-15 Speed Racer
-16. Mars Needs Moms
-17. jack the giant slayer
-18. Cowboys and Aliens
-19. Conan The Barbarian
-20. The Wolfman

Feel free to make suggestions about others that should be on the list.

Also I'd like to specify that this does not represent my personal ranking of the films-they are just listed in random order. I actually havent seen quite a few of them since the just looked so terrible i didnt want to waste my time/money on them.

My list would go as follows:

1. Conan the Barbarian
2. Speed Racer
3. White house Down
4. Green lantern
5. The Wolfman
6. Cowboys and Aliens
7. Cloud Atlas
8. Ender's Game
9. John Carter

reply

Virtually every movie on that list is garbage, although i thought John Carter was pretty good

reply

Cloud Atlas and Ender's Game are a separate kind of movies from the others in the list. They were made for over-average intelligent viewers and, unfortunately, the world wasn't ready for them.

Though I also have to admit that 47 Ronin had a charm that you don't get with Hollywood blockbusters and some other movies, like Speed Racer, are in category of their own- a certain genre.

The others in the list were made for dumb masses who, turns, out, weren't as dumb as to not recognize them for what they were.

My ratings are not always like the IMDB average score because I only enjoy intelligent movies.

i actually really loved speed racer and cloud atlas... john carter and lone ranger were a bit messy but overall enjoyable, ronin was dumb and inoffensive fun, conan only doesnt rank lower because i think momoa does fantastic fight sequences, and legend of hercules WOULD have gotten bottom spot because it basically feels like a really cheap poorly made and boring tv movie, but after earth just did EVERYTHING wrong so it takes out the top spot as worst recent fail.

reply

Nice explanations for your ranking logic. Much appreciated. IDK whether to congratulate you or just express amazement that you've actually seen that many of these terrible terrible movies. Sitting through The legend of hercules alone seems like a very impressive accomplishment lol.

reply

Green Lantern and Clout Atlas rocked.
The unnecessary adaptation of Oldboy was super crappy.
The crappiest film in that list, though, is the Legend of Hercules.
What an abomination...

Best
1.Speed Racer - Not great but visually stunning
2.John Carter
3.Jack the Giant Slayer

5.Lone Ranger

Worst

3.I Frankenstein

(I had to close Speed Racer after 20 minutes and I rarely do that for a movie. So because I haven't watched it in its entirety I didn't put it on the list.)

1 - I, Frankenstein
2 - After Earth
3 - 47 Ronin
4 - White House Down
5 - The Legend of Hercules
6 - Green Lantern
7- The Lone Ranger
8 - Pompeii (Edit: Game of Thrones fanatic and Jon Snow supporter so biased view :))
9 - John Carter
10 - Enders Game

I haven't seen most of these but I liked Green Lantern, though I judge superhero movies lightly. I, Frankenstein kinda sucked but had cool effects. Can I add Pacific Rim? That's probably the worst movie I've seen in awhile.

You can't. 'Pacific Rim' was not a box office failure overall.

Also, if you seriously think 'Pacific Rim' was the worst film you've seen in a while, you might want to check out 'The Legend of Hercules'.

So skip The Legend of Hercules? Got it!

reply

That doesn't make 'Pacific Rim' one of the worst films of 2013.

In fact, if you think 'Pacific Rim' was one of the worst films of 2013, you clearly haven't seen these:
-Paranoia
-Getaway
-Grown Ups 2
-Movie 43
-The Starving Games (this one is not even a film. What am I saying?)

reply

I didn't say it was. I said it was the worst movie I've seen in a long time. And nope, I haven't seen any of those movies. The only one I even know of is Movie 43 and there was no way in hell I was seeing that crapfest. It looked terrible!

But Pacific Rim had some actors I wanted to see and some friends told me they liked it. Sorry, I meant former friends.

reply

The starving games was quite funny, not as bad as the Hungover Games IMO.

reply

I agree, Pacific rim made a very modest profit although it was pretty painful to watch. It seems amazing to me that Guillermo del torro would allow such low quality performances from his cast even considering that the bots and monsters were the films main focus. Pretty disappointing movie overall, but not a box office bomb.

Movies aren't getting better in spite of better effects. It should be about the STORY first and foremost, but the story tends to get lost under all the glitz and explosions.

Desperation just isn't attractive, even if you're a movie. Churning them out faster and faster with depleted stories isn't working.

Too bad the ones who make the movies won't read the threads under this title.

Of the ones I've seen, I rather liked "Cowboys and Aliens."

The "Wolfman" was actually quite good, it was reminiscent of the 1941 black and white classic version with Lon Chaney Jr and Claude Rains.

I wanted to like "Cloud Atlas" more than I actually did, and I'm very glad I read the book first.

"Conan the Barbarian" was much better than I had expected.

"Jack the Giant Slayer" was pretty cute, I liked it okay.

"R.I.P.D" was a disappointment, I generally love Jeff Bridges movies but it just fell flat for me...

Unfortunately I haven't seen most of the others on your list, but felt compelled to chime in, just the same.

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

reply

I agree with Wolfman and C&A being better than expected. Wolfman especially, it was slowly paced in the same way as those old school Universal films and had a great focus on the curse of the werewolf, the drama and pathos of the lawrence talbot character. I guess the audience for modern horror probably just didnt know what to think, and like I said the pacing could've benefited from some tweaking.

reply

100% agree that Story should come first and foremost. it costs tens or hundreds of millions to make the movie and i'd guess the cost of the script is probably a drop in the bucket in the overall budget. why not take a little more care in refining the script before spending millions on explosions and effects that don't exactly "grab" you back into the movie when you realize the script is bad.
