This had some potential, but ( 3/10 ) ( potential spoilers )

I like Ray Romano. He seems like a talented actor, director and producer and played some great characters in some excellent series.

The problem with "Somewhere In Queens" is that its portrayal of Italians was kind of negative, and particularly Ray's character's family.

First, Laurie Metcalf, is really showing a lot of range in the parts she's been playing - she was great in this. All the actors played their parts well.

The two things that bothered me, personally, where first who calls their kid "Sticks" - because he has spindly legs. What kind of poor kid wants to go through life - at least to high school or college? They used this nickname almost 100% of the time and it was glaring. Then, today, it's hard to imagine how this kid Matthew/Sticks could grow up so naive. The family seemed dysfunctional at many levels.

The other thing that got annoying and stuck out like a sore thumb was the constant references to the movie "Rocky". Movies should not refer to much or lean to strongly on other movies, even if they think they are great.

Glad I watched it, but I would not watch it again nor could I recommend it.

I'm not Italian American, I'm just Scottish/English Canadian but I found the family's hard-edge parenting style to be kind of refreshing , that aspect didn't bother me too much.

The family felt disfuctional but that was the only interesting part of the movie for me - Rather than the sappy love story between his son and the girl. That was what held the movie down for me. Give me a whole movie of Italian family disfunction, The Godfather for example, one of the greatest movies ever. But I don't need another emo high school love story. That held the movie back for me and I agree 100% with your 3/10 rating.

I liked that aspect of the movie too. Didn't save it for me, or lets say it did not make me want to add it to my list of memorable movies.

I also liked the ... what I guess I would call gritty portrayal of the nasty side of young girls - though they could not really portray her as "nasty", that's how it started, and then they saved her by her being willing to go in on the father's plan.

It's bittersweet how they portray the girl. I think this movie was really more about the girl, because the guy was such a schlub.
