Didn't people know about the upcoming Moon landing in 1969?

And like sputnik and all that shit. Human's had been in space for years up to that point and everyone acts like the atmosphere is an unconquerable problem. Mayhaps make the movie take place in 1665 or something? Just a thought

I'm genuinely curious though, if Apollo 11 was a government kept secret or not? A response would be appreciated :)
