A question to the Black Americans here.

I am an Aussie so I am distanced from the US and this is an honest question.

Do you get tired of the wise cracking Black guy act that so many T.V shows and movies employ? I assume its not real life stuff?

Seems like every black guy on tv has the 'oh hell no', Eddie Murphy, Will Smith type banter.

Well in many ways it was.

The Bikie scene - Murphy in the redneck bar in 48 Hours.
The stripper scene -again Murphy
The Gunshop
The 1st scene of Hart in the Police Station

Its this smart ass, motor mouth stuff.

no.

it wasn't the same.

kevin hart is a manchild, not a smartass and not wisecracking guy. he's actually a bit on the naive side with his comedy.

From people that do it poorly.....cough**Mike Epps**cough

I haven't seen this movie, but I can say that most comedy is culturally based. In other words, people find humor in things they can relate to or have experienced. The dominant culture in America is Euro-American based, therefore most comedy will focus around that and the dominant and minority groups will find humor in that venue. When it comes to subcultures, the minority group can find it humorous, but the dominant group might struggle to see the comedy just because it's not something they've experienced or can relate to. Comedy is definitely in the eye of the beholder.

I have lived & worked among minority groups for decades. No amount of sociology lectures will make this movie funny or relevant.

Why is it difficult to accept that film is plain stupid, instead of excusing it as culturally relevant (which btw can lead to other problems -- are you saying Blacks have this inferior level of comical sense?)?

This is an unfunny film, same way Jackasses & Adam Sandler films are stupid.

There seems to be trends that get followed for a while, not just in comedy but in advertising too. For a long time it was common to see the wife is a bitch and the husband is a moron. Maybe that traces back to shows like King of Queens and Everybody Loves Raymond.

Long ago white on black comedy was common - where whites made fun of blacks. Then, in the 70's, shows like Sandford & Son, and What's Happening had black on black comedy where blacks made fun of themselves. So I guess now it's full circle.

Tired of seeing such a ridiculous display of wise-cracking black guys acting like clowns for the sake of getting laughs? So poorly that im reminded of Steffen/fetchin, amos/andy and many others goin. Back to early 20th century??

I'm waay beyond tired. So much so i stopped paying to go see comedies.

I understand where you're coming from. Eddie Murphy was the master of motor mouth, smartass jokes. There were while guys who were good at this too including Jackie Gleason, Rodney Dangerfield & George Carlin.

Are people tired of this type of comedy? Some might be, but as you can see, there are still many movie goers who seem to enjoy it. Who would have though that this movie would make over $100 million? Not I. I'm more tired of comedians trying to do this who aren't very good at it. Kevin Hart is ok, but he's no Eddie Murphy. I don't think Kevin Hart can carry a film by himself. Other comedians who work better off of others include Mike Epps and Dave Chappelle. These guys are not great Stand Up comedians either.

I agree, they need to use some new material. I lot of the jokes are being reused and what was funny in the 80's, isn't always funny today.

tjbjpk what shows and movies do you see, may I ask. Black shows that you may see are none excitant here in America now (thank god). The last one that I can remember seeing is those Tyler Perry bull crap but those are not really on TV anymore.

Now a days we have Scandal and Being Mary Jane as the black shows. You also have The Game which is a bull crap show but other wise doesn't depict black people as ignorant run around fools.

if you want to see quality black movies see 12 years a slave or Mandella. As for tv Scandal and Being Mary Jane , classics like A different world and the Crosby show .

Here's how the entertainment business works: They make stuff that people are willing to pay for. When the market dries up, they make different things. The answer to the question you pose is obviously "No". When we DO get tired of it... the entertainment business will make something different (cause, you know: people won't pay for it).

Why are you sitting around so worried about what Black people are doing? You can flip the switch on your TV/radio/computer ANYTIME. If you don't like it IGNORE IT. this is exactly what Black people do to your kind until you start with the passive aggressive backhanded BS. It's a very strange obsession that you have. I don't like alligators. I don't *beep* with alligators. Simple.

reply

It was a question, not an obsession, so there is no reason to get all huffy and defensive.

Also I do now how it all works but there is also a chicken and the egg scenario as well. Do they make it cause people pay or do people pay cause that's all there is presented to them?
