Hailee Steinfeld was chosen for a role from the 15 000 applicants

While I was watching the film, I said - OK, that's some good acting.

After I found out the number of the applicants, I said - OK, come on, she's not that good again.

It's not like she's some genious from another dymension or anything ...

It's Hollywood. I wouldn't doubt she's related to someone. or has connections.

The Coens work on a budget. They chose the best person they could among a large pool of applicants. Naturally, this was a prize part, and they had alot of applicants to choose from. This does not mean they gave every applicant an equal opportunity to be interviewed, heard or tested. That would take forever, especially if there were really 15,000 applicants.

I can't remember where I read it, but I recall Hailee Steinfeld had to go through 8 different readings, the last one being for the Coen Brothers themselves. She was cast very late on in production.

You can see why it was worthwhile they cast their net far and wide to come up with her for the part. She's fantastic in the role. Kim Darby was good in the original; Hailee Steinfed is great in the remake.

reply

Kim Darby was exponentially better than Hailee Steinfed. While Jeff Bridges was on par with John Wayne and Matt Damon on par with Glen Campbell, Hailee fell far short of living up to, much less surpassing Kim's performance.

reply

I disagree, I prefer Hailee and want she only 12-13 in this?

reply

Frankly i found her acting to be on par with Fred Savage.

I think question should be. Is that the best they could do. Because i didn't find her acting conceiving at all.

reply

I doubt her acting could have conceived anything. Maybe it could have convinced a few though...

Conceive
1.become pregnant with (a child). "she was conceived when her father was 49"
2.form or devise (a plan or idea) in the mind. "the dam project was originally conceived in 1977"

"Relics of ancient times. Lonely cenotaphs. Standing along that melancholy tideland."

I thought she was great. Infact I thought she was the best actor in the movie.

I found her unconvincing. Reminded me of a 14 year-old Keanu Reeves. A bit Asperger-ish. Showed more emotion over her horse's death than her fathers. Had some problems with Kim Darby as well (a little too 'oh, gosh, gee-whiz!' for my taste). Would have cast someone scruffier, wilder, less controlled, more genuine, less emotionally flat.
