I do agree that the film as a whole was pretty lackluster (watched it a couple days ago with my friend), though.

My take on this is we are seeing things from the boy’s point of view. I remember as a kid some old people made me uncomfortable. They smelled weird, seemed to eat weird and just gross. The boy clearly loves his Grandfather so he’s seen as a strong fun loving man. The grandmother is a loud mouth tough woman and shown that in her looks and how she behaves too.
