I like her performance here better than the one in Sliver Linings Playbook, perhaps because I could relate more to her character in this film. However, as several posters had pointed out, there was no way she could have won against Natalie Portman. It was clear from the very beginning that the filmmakers were pushing like mad for an Oscar for Portman, like highlighting how much effort she had put into ballet, that she actually did almost all of the dancing etc. I like her performance in Black Swan, but what I am saying is that all the buzz that was there even long before the film was released almost ensured that she bludgeoned all her way to the Award Ceremonies. So for Jennifer, the nomination itself could be regarded as a victory giving her the appropriate recognition.
A second factor was age. No one as young as Jennifer at the time of this film had ever won in the Main Actress category. Ellen Page was about the same age when she was nominated for Juno but also did not win. There had been much younger nominees, including the Whale Rider girl and the black girl in Beasts of the Southern Wild who was touted as the youngest nominee ever. Neither of them had any serious chance of winning. When Jennifer finally won two years later, she has still remained the youngest winner to this day.
