Mikaela was the kind of woman who was ready to be in battle with her boyfriend, who took risks, knew how to hot wire vehicles, tried to help battle the enemy, and was unwilling to just be a victim. This is the kind of woman you marry.
Carly was just there to look good, pretends to love Sam(she was almost always brow beating the guy and being unhelpful), and in general is just there to be kidnapped by the enemy since she doesn't do anything besides be eye candy. The sad part is if Sam was not awarded a medal she probably NEVER would have given him the time of day. This is the kind of girl you have a one night stand with before a real relationship.
Mikaela did not have issues with Sam doing the hero thing, Carly did, Carly was unwilling to accept Sam's dangerous life and in the end would be more likely to leave him being unable to cope with the lifestyle. Mikaela would willing to be in the battle zone with Sam and trying to help him be a hero, she is not only able to cope with a hero lifestyle she is an active participant.

Mikaela by far. It was just ridiculous how they wrote her out when her and Sam's romance was such a huge part of the first two movies. Even as bad as this series is, if they were going to put so much focus on the human characters, they should have just kept the same character, even if they were going to recast. Yes, it's annoying when characters are recast, but at least it would have felt more consistent. It was too much of a cop-out and betrayal to the audience to have a new love interest and a lame single-line of dialog explanation about how they "broke up"... It's almost as bad as when series kill of characters in-between.
