I heard a lot of complaining that "Straight Outta Compton" was stiffed at the Oscars.
I suppose some might find this entertaining -- but most will not.
It's dreary, depressing, and vulgar.
The main characters are self-indulgent, ruthless thugs. It was impossible for me to empathize with them.
Most of the problems in their neighborhoods stem from their own lawless behavior.
I can take about 10 minutes of Gansta Rap, and that's about it.
So it's not Oscar worthy because it's not your typical white movie? Figures!
This movie showed a group of talented black men (not thugs or gangsters if you watched that movie), some of the founding fathers of rap and hip hop, who created groundbreaking music that helped them coup and escaped oppression from a bigot, ruthless, white society who viewed them as violent criminals instead of regular, peaceful civilans. It's shows what a certain race of people went through on a daily basis and what is still transpiring so I disagree, this deserved an Oscar!
Yes, this group of black men had talent, but you may recall they were waving guns in the hotel. That makes them gangsters in my book. Also, the lyrics of their songs, while sometimes clever, were mostly profane to the point of being unlistenable. It's 25 percent genius, 75 percent garbage. The music is mostly not uplifting, and neither was this movie.

I was surprised that this movie did so well at the box office. If found that out after writing my original review. I also mostly like Ice Cube as an actor, who produced this movie, and who was portrayed in this movie. "Barbershop" as corny as it is, and lightweight as it is, is to me more entertaining.
The Godfather, one of my favorite movies, is also a movie about people being born in a rough situation and who use illegal, and violent, means to get out of it. The first movie and the second won Oscars for best picture.
shareI finally watched Straight Outta Compton yesterday, had to see for myself what I thought. It certainly wasn't boring, and for the film I could appreciate the music. Good acting by all.
But it wasn't Oscar bait. Judging strictly as a movie, it was worth watching but not Oscar worthy.

VERY good point for me, who has been understanding diversity in Oscars but not for this AMos and Andy stereotype. It sets blacks AND women (by means of the outdated---even in the 1980s music world----sexism.)
